Assumption Terrace residents cement sense of place in stone

- By DAVID LOOBY

ASSUMPTION Terrace residents have their estate’s name back at the entrance to their Rosbercon estate, on the original large stone, surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Community volunteers did all of the work on the granite rock at the estate and on the writing on the stone.

The stone was originally found in the Bawnmore by Minnie Aylward and Margaret Byrne around 30 years ago. The women thought it would look well at the entrance to Assumption Terrace as there was no name stone there at the time. They contacted Pat Lyng from Irishtown, who arranged for Freddie James to collect it. The stone was taken to Rosbercon where Tom Walsh, John Davey and some locals put a sling around it and put it into place. Funeral director Jamie Doyle offered to put a name on the stone.

The estate’s name had faded from the stone, which stood at the entrance to the estate from the Eighties on. It was restored and Bridget Purcell and Mary Walsh planted the shrubs and flowers.

Vibe hair salon, Jamie Doyle funeral director – Wexford Stone Works, Helen Walsh, the Parish Pump, John and Tony’s Take Away all joined in on the effort for the good of the area.
