Two New Ross parks awarded green flags

-

THE Library Park and Pearse Park in New Ross won green flags from An Taisce on Thursday at Malahide Castle Visitors Centre.

36 Irish parks received their Green Flags on the day for exceeding tough environmental standards for green space management and for delivering excellent visitor facilities.

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal – Damien English T.D., opened the award ceremony. He said: ‘ The Green Flag Awards encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways. The act of planning, creating, and using a public utility, be it a community garden, park or open space, brings people, communities and neighbours together. It is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle to have access to, and to be able to enjoy, outdoor amenities particularly those which are so well tended and maintained.’

As a result of the success New Ross Town will shortly have Green Flags proudly flying high over Pearse Park and the Library Park, matching the previously accredited Marina’s Blue Flag, with all three now recognised as key amenities in New Ross. The parks offer fully inclusive, multidisciplinary, accessible facilities at no cost to the user, providing services to the town and district ranging from tourism and sport to recreation.

Dean Waters of New Ross Municipal District council said: ‘ The aim of New Ross Municipal District and Wexford County Council is to encourage and welcome a complete diversity of visitor and user to the parks by promoting a culture of universal access and integration for all whilst continuing the ongoing development of the county as an attractive location to work, live and visit.’
