Hook shows for leading light of stage and screen
A STAR of film and TV will be following her other passion in a spectacular Wexford setting next month.
Maria Doyle Kennedy will step into the spotlight at Hook Lighthouse for two very intimate concerts on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26.
The 800-year-old lighthouse is a familiar setting for Doyle Kennedy as she’s played a number of sellout shows in the venue in recent years. And she’s no stranger to County Wexford, having spent a significant part of her childhood growing up in Enniscorthy.
From the Black Velvet Band to touring alongside husband Kieran Kennedy, and pursuing a solo career, Maria Doyle Kennedy has had an accomplished career as a singer/ songwriter. But she’s probably best known beyond these shores for her film and TV roles.
Currently co-starring as Siobhán Sadler in the hit Canadian TV series Orphan Black, for which she’s picked up a number of awards, Doyle Kennedy had her big break in Alan Parker’s 1991 movie The Commitments. Since then she’s become a very familiar face on our screens, playing Katherine of Aragon in The Tudors, and Vera Bates in Downton Abbey, among others.
A limited number of tickets to Maria Doyle Kennedy’s fully-seated Hook Lighthouse shows are now on sale at €30. Fans can expect favourite songs along with some new material from an upcoming album, due later this year.
The two concerts are included in a programme of National Heritage Week events at Hook Lighthouse.
There will be a family fun day on Sunday, August 20, with free fun games on the lighthouse lawns. On Saturday August 26 the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group will host an information day. And, on Sunday, August 27, the ‘Pirates of the Peninsula’ will take over the lighthouse for the day.
