Marvellous maiden voyage for Filthy Ape
SOUTH WEST WEXFORD FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE LAUNCH THEIR NEW BOAT
THE FRUITS of plenty of thought, creativity and hard work were set afloat in Enniscorthy recently as members of the Glór and Fusion Youth Projects from South West Wexford Family Resource Centre in Ramsgrange gathered on the riverbank to officially launch their boat - the wonderfully titled ‘Filthy Ape’.
The boat was completely constructed by a talented crew of young people as part of the Glór and Fusion Summer Programme under the guidance of Kilmore Quay based artist Andi McGarry.
A lot of hard work went into the project over five jam-packed days which saw the boat built and painted, fostering a great sense of teamwork among the group and teaching them the basics of woodwork and boat-building.
The finished article was transported to Enniscorthy under the watchful eye of the Sheilbaggan Outdoor Education Centre and she set out on her maiden voyage with a crew of nine paddling hard under Captain Andi McGarry.
Conditions were perfect as The Filthy Ape moved down the river towards Edermine where the hungry crew had lunch before completing their voyage.
A great success, the project was generously funded by Wexford County Council’s Arts Office and the Glór and Fusion projects wished to thank them, Andi, Dave Ellis, Colin and the Sheilbaggan crew, Tusla and Southwest Wexford FRC.
