NEW ROSS

The club classic played over four days was a great success with all players enjoying perfect golfing weather and the rain keeping far away.

A grand total of 502 players or 251 two-person teams took part with some 92 individuals re-entering the competition, all in search of the fabulous prizes.

The main sponsor was Pascal Bolger of Culcita to whom the club extend their sincere thanks as well as all others who sponsored prizes and the tee-boxes. Great credit is due to our incoming Captain, Martin Carroll, and his committee for the splendid organisation of the event which went off without a hitch.

Taking the first prize with a great score of 61 points courtesy of a better back nine were Michael Kavanagh (16) and Noel Dunne (19). In second place with 61 points also were Helen Walsh (20, Mount Juliet) and Jason Devine (21).

Third place went to Willie Byrne (14) and Andy Ronan (16) with 60 points, again having a better back nine holes.

Des Cleary (14, West Waterford) and Tommy Butler (17) took fourth prize with 60 points whilst Mick Logue (18) and Rita Dunphy (35) were fifth with 59 points after a countback.

Sixth prize was won by Eamon Jones (19) and Graham Bradley (24) with 59 points, the same score as seventh team home, Noel Devine (17) and Steve Travis (18). Winning prize number eight were John Howlin (11) and Seamus Aldridge (12) with 58 points.

In the ladies’ section, Mary O’Leary (13) and Eleanor Roche (19) took the honours with 52 points, Margaret Furlong (15) and Mary Shannon (17) were second with 51 points, whilst Ann Conway (14) and Teresa Foley (17) were placed third with 51 points also.

The Seniors part saw Tom Conway (9) and Richie Aylward (19) winning with 57 points, just clear of Martin Carroll (15) and J.J. Hoyne (19) who finished on 56 points.

Junior Cashin (5) and Joan Foley (32) won the mixed with 56 points, the pair being three points clear of runners-up Kevin Treacy (19) and Angela Treacy (21) who finished on 53 points.

The non-G.U.I. first prize went to Paul Sinnott (14) and John Sinnott (22) with 53 points, winning by two from Dick Cuddihy (13) and Michael Gannon (16) on 51 points.

Nearest the pin on the 14th hole for men was won by Keith Barrett, and for ladies by Margaret O’Sullivan (West Waterford).

The raffle held in conjunction with the classic with a first prize of a hamper worth €250 saw Teresa Byrne being the winner, whilst Eamon Walsh won the second hamper worth €150. Harry Curtis was the third prize winner of a bottle of brandy and Eleanor Roche took home four bottles of wine as the fourth prize.

At the presentations, club Captain Peter Goggin thanked all who took part and had a special word of thanks for Pascal Bolger and all the other sponsors. He paid a warm tribute to Martin Carroll who was the brains behind the event and said only for his hard work over along number of weeks it would not have been the outstanding success it was for the club.

The Tuesday evening fourball is still being played over 14 holes and the latest winners were John Evoy (14) and Jim Foran (19) with 37 points after a countback over the last six holes.

Seamus Power (14) and John Murphy (14) finished second with 37 points also, the same score as thirdplaced Davy Kehoe (14) and Tommy Kehoe (19), both of Enniscorthy.

This Tuesday evening, August 22, sees the format changed to a champagne scramble with the sponsor being Tom O’Brien Construction Ltd.

The Split The Pot club fund-raiser is going great guns and is surely the value bet of the year. For an entry fee of only €2 you have a chance of winning a decent few Euro such as our latest winner Darren Tutty who brought home €86.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

It was a miserable day for golf last Thursday with frequent downpours of rain sweeping in across the course. Morning forecasts said the south-east would remain relatively dry, getting the best of this mixed summer of Irish weather.

But to our dismay the rain arrived in torrents, making conditions and scoring too rather difficult. Sodden fairways and temporary waterlogged greens made the going tough for the 14 competing teams, some of whom called a halt rather early.

The tallies were way down on previous results and no team went in shouting distance of the 90 points target.

In the end, the 83 points scored by Denis Kirwan (12), Dan Quigley (18), Tony Wallace (21) and Tom Kent (26) proved good enough to claim first prize. Second with 81 points were Patsy Farrell (16), Willie Naddy (19), Larry Shannon (20) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (24).

The third spot went to Tony Harford (14), Johnny Watson (18), John Joe Cullen (19) and Frank Boyle (20) with 80 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Frank Boyle on the ninth hole and Kenny Irwin on the eleventh.

This Thursday, August 24, sees the staging of the monthly three-person scramble which is proving rather popular to all competitors, and tee-times are on the website.

Congratulations to our esteemed colleague, John Murphy, on winning the President’s prize for 2017, backing up another Senior, Luke Power, who won the 2017 Captain’s prize. Surely proof that like a good wine some golfers get better as the years go by, and as the old saying goes, ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’. It certainly was where these two Seniors are concerned.
