FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA
The senior football team played Gusserane in the fourth round of the championship last Saturday evening in New Ross. They gave a very disappointing performance and showed none of the intensity which they had in their previous game. Points from Mikie Dwyer and Daire Barden gave them the lead after nine minutes but Gusserane reeled off the scores and took a commanding eight point lead when they converted a penalty deep in first half injury time.
Fethard chances suffered a further blow when John Tubritt, who had been at the receiving end of some gamesmanship throughout received a second yellow card early in the second half. Their inability to score some straight forward frees costly them also as they lost out on a 1-14 to 0-4 scoreline. They play Horeswood in their final game needing at least a draw to progress to the knockout stages.
The Fethard Intermediate hurlers play Taghmon next Saturday in New Ross at 17.15 in their final group game having already qualified for the knockout stages.
COISTE NA NÓG
The under-14 hurlers had a good win in their Division 2 co quarter final v Rathnure at home last Saturday morning. Two goals in either half at the right moments gave them the breathing space over their opponents who bagged three second half goals to keep them in the hunt. The boys now face Rapparees in the semi-final. Final score 4-9 to 3-4. A good finish to the group stages of under-16 hurling by the Fethard/Clongeen combination with a win over Geraldine O’Hanrahans last Friday evening on a 5-14 to 4-7 scoreline.
The lads now qualify for the co quarter final to be played Monday, August 28. The under-12 footballers were away to Marshalstown in quarter final last Tuesday evening. They trailed by just a point coming into the final third but a strong Marshalstown finish with three goals in that final segment saw them go through 4-9 to 1-10. It was still a successful year for the team and their coach Andrew Whelan.
