College students get cookery and health tips

-

STUDENTS were taught positive mental health lessons and quick meal tips during an evening at New Ross Credit Union on Friday night.

Organised as part of the credit union’s college loans drive, the event drew a 100 strong crowd.

Credit Union business development officer Stella Kehoe said the night was a great success with several people calling into the premises the following day to thank them for organising it.

Niall O’Muirí of Wexford Mental Health gave a 15 minute talk called ‘Mind Your Mental Health’. He spoke of the importance of doing at least 30 minutes exercise a day, how anxiety and depression are so prevalent in society and advised the 15 students in attendance and the parents and grandparents to connect, keep learning, give, take notice and interact.

Chef Edward Hayden prepared three easy dishes for students: curry and coconut soup, spict meatballs and chicken stir fry and everyone enjoyed sampling the food and tea, coffee and confectionaries afterwards. The creit union opened late for three weeks recently to facilitate parents and students, some of whom avail of loans of €15,000 to meet their college expenses.

The credit union runs a bursary scheme providing €1,000 for first year college students and two €500 bursaries for PLC course students.

The closing date is October 20 for the New Ross and Bunclody credit union area.
