A VIRTUOSO display from Todd Hynes helped Wexford Bohs to a handsome victory in their Youth Division 2 clash in Drinagh on Saturday.
The captain led by example as he helped himself to five goals in a team performance that was laced with skill and swagger.
It took the hosts less than 15 seconds to begin the new season with a bang as Luke Maguire gathered a pass from Jordan Donovan, hared down the left wing and arrowed a shot into the far corner of the net.
With just six minutes on the clock the lead was doubled, when Maguire was brought down in the area and Hynes stepped up to confidently drive the ball low and hard to the left-hand corner of the net.
Goalkeeper Tadgh Culleton was forced into a fine save by Andrew Byrne on 12 minutes, but seconds later he was again picking the ball out of the net when Todd Hynes fired in a blistering volley from the edge of the area, a truly exceptional strike.
The goals continued to arrive like taxis at a rank with Shane Doyle getting his head on Justin Butler’s 17th minute corner to divert it over the line.
Bohs had to wait until the 38th minute to grab their fifth goal, with Hynes bursting forward and coolly finishing past Culleton to complete his first-half hat-trick.
Bohs made five switches at the break but, in the main, the pattern remained the same, although to their credit New Ross Town kept plugging away.
The hosts continued to pepper shots on goal, with Justin Butler, in particular, going close on numerous occasions.
New Ross Town were given an opportunity to grab a consolation goal in the 74th minute when Shane Doyle handled the ball in the area and referee Jimmy O’Neill pointed to the spot.
Goalkeeper Tadgh Culleton made the long walk forward to take the spot-kick, but his opposite number was equal to it, pulling off a fine double save.
Bohs then ruthlessly rubbed salt in the wounds, with the irrepressible Hynes adding two more goals to his tally in the space of three minutes, first turning superbly and applying a clinical finish, and then driving in a well-executed strike from the edge of the area.
Substitute Warren O’Connor than wrapped up an impressive victory with the last kick of the game, racing on to a pass from Justin Butler and burying his effort to the corner of the net.
