COMMUNITIES across New Ross and south Kilkenny are in mourning this week following the sudden death of a pregnant young mother-of-two.

Sonja Wayland, who turned 34 in June, died suddenly at her Ballybrazil home on Saturday morning.

Sonja (née Power), hailed from Slieverue.

She married local man Andrew Wayland, who she met thourgh the Dunbrody Archers – a group she was a member of. Sonja and Andrew were married in late December and had one child Cameron (1) together. She was the devoted mother of Cian also and very close to Andrew’s son Calum.

Andrew said: ‘She was my absolute rock. I am just devastated. Nobody can get to terms with it. She had just found out that she was a few weeks pregnant and had been to see the doctor for a check-up. The doctor rang in tears, she can’t believe it.’

Andrew said Sonja was in the shower when she suddenly took ill.

‘I tried to resuscitate her and had 999 on the line. The ambuilance crew came and they tried too but she died at home.’

Sonja, who worked as a legal secretary for Kieran Boland’s law firm in Kilkenny City, was about to go swimming with her baby Cameron and Andrew when she took ill.

Andrew said: ‘She was a fantastic person. We were married in Whitechurch and she will be buried in Whitechurch Tuesday. She was Church of Ireland and I am Catholic but nothing ever came between us. She was a great, loyal friend and a very thoughtful person. She was a kind hearted mother who doted on he children and the baby was her little pride and joy.’

Sonja grew up in Snowhill, Slieverue and settled into Ballybrazil community after she and Andrew struck up a romance.

‘It’s just gut wrenching, especially with the baby, but then the baby won’t understand. Everyone is just devastated. She was just 34. Sonja was a great confidante and friend and she had a huge circle of friends. I would say to everyone to go home and give everyone they love a hug. Hug your kids as you never know when something like this will happen. Words cannot even begin to express how I, the boys and the family are feeling now, Sonja was such an amazing and loving woman snatched away from us in a flash and far, far too young. Sonja, we will always love you and will never ever forget you. You kept us all connected.’

Sonja is grieved by Andrew; her sons Cian and Cameron; her stepson Calum; parents Patrick and Geraldine; brother Thomas; sister Rose; stepmother Sheila; niece Chloe; brother-in-law Trevor, extended family and a large circle of friends.

She reposed at her parents’ residence in Snowhill, Slieverue, on Monday afternoon and evening and her funeral service takes place today (Tuesday) at 12 noon in Christchurch Cathedral, Waterford, with burial afterwards in Whitechurch Churchyard, New Ross, Co. Wexford, arriving at 1.45 p.m. approximately.
