GOOD COUNSEL’S CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE HONOUR

- By SARA GAHAN

STUDENTS from the Good Counsel College, New Ross were awarded for raising awareness of the message ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help.’

The Good Counsel were awarded the prestigious status of Ambassador School by Cycle Against Suicide in recognition of their fulfilment of the Five Gears and their commitment to the promotion of positive mental health.

The annual Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School Awards ceremony was held at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, where 89 schools around the country were recognised for their immense effort.

‘ This is our third year receiving this award and we are very proud as we are one of 10 schools in the country to receive it three years in a row,’ said teacher Shirley Dempsey.

The school programme is one aspect of a wide range of Cycle Against Suicide initiatives and programmes and involves the completion of ‘Five Gears’ over the course of a year.

The programme provides a framework for schools to integrate mental health activities into the school plan, and rewards schools who go that extra mile.

Minister of State for European Affairs Helen McEntee presented the award to the students from the Good Counsel, on what was a very positive and enjoyable day.

The school was represented at the event by teachers Shirley Dempsey and Sharon Murphy and students Robert Cogley and Jake Dunne, who are proud of their achievements.
