A cheque for €900 was presented to Cushinstown National School’s Sunroom autistic unit last week.

A parent of one of the pupils who avails of the fantastic unit and school, raised the money through a pool tournament at Alan Morrissey’s pub in Cassagh last July.

Davy O’ Dwyer from Heath park, Old court, said the event was a great success, with some sharp shooting from entrants .‘ The competition was won by a local team, the Ca hills of Bally cullane. We raised €90 in total for the autistic unit at Cu shins town NS which has been open for around ten years .’

Mr O’ Dwyer said the Sun Room unit is making a huge difference to the lives of children with autism in the community.

He said: ‘It’s a very good facility and I wanted to give something back just to help out a bit.’

Children who attend the unit are take non monthly trips by teachers to fun and educational places.

Mr O’Dwyer said: ‘It makes an awful good difference.’ The Sunroom classroom is designed so that each child has their own working area and also a group work table for school work, social skills, play and lunch.

The Sunroom consists of one classroom which can cater for up to six children. This class has one class teacher and two Special Needs Assistants. The Sunroom aims to offer an autism specific learning environment within a mainstream school. Within the sunroom there is also a multi-sensory room.
