FRIENDS and family of a young man from Screen who has spent the past year in hospital after being seriously injured in a quad bike accident, have banded together to raise funds to help bring him home.

Darren Corrigan (22) has been in a coma since the accident on June 23, 2016. He had returned home from work at the family business, C&C building providers and hardware store in Screen, and said he was going for a spin with a friend in a nearby field.

He hit a bump in the field. The quad bike went up in the air and struck him on the side of the head as it landed. He wasn’t wearing a helmet.

It was a few weeks before his 21st birthday.

His family are hoping to eventually bring him home, where he will be given his long term care.

Several major fundraisers have been organised to help make this possible, including the social dancing night in White’s Hotel this weekend. White’s are providing the function room free of charge.

Darren, a member of Blackwater GAA and Curracloe soccer club, is well known in the local area. He also has strong links with North Wexford as his mother Maresa is from Camolin. He is currently under the care of consultant Ken Mealy and the staff at St Patrick’s Ward in Wexford General Hospital. Some of the funds raised to date will be used for equipment in St Patrick’s Ward, to help with his recovery and for the use of other patients.

‘Our Fight for Darren’ takes place in White’s Hotel, Wexford on Sunday, September 24, from 8 p.m. till late. Music is by the Heartbeats, Joe Davitt and his band, and the Moynihans. Tickets are €15, and there will be competitive dances with lots of prizes. Doors open 7 p.m.

Companies are invited to provide sponsorship. Ticket holders who cannot attend can write their name on the back of the tickets and they will be entered into a draw on the night for several prizes.

Tickets are available from White’s Hotel; Leisuremax, Wexford; C&C Building Providers, Screen; Elaine Byrne for those in the Camolin, Craanford or Gorey area at 087 2841128; or any family member
