Vital Sars success in anniversary year

- Stories behind the scene Leinster rugby trio

NATURALLY ENOUGH there was great rejoicing within the Sarsfields club on Friday night after a late scoring surge saw them preserve their Senior status with a 2-9 to 1-8 victory over Horeswood in Cushinstown.

It was the second time that the Butters avoided the drop on the last day, having successfully overcome Bannow-Ballymitty and Glynn-Barntown in two tense games back in 2010 when three teams were relegated as part of the re-structuring from 16 teams to twelve.

And it was particularly important, and significant, that the Sars should stay up on such an historic year for the club.

Next month, on October 14 to be precise, they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of arguably their greatest year of all: 1967, when three superb sides swept to an incredible treble of Senior, Under-21 and Minor championship triumphs.

While those heady heights are proving difficult to attain these days, the Sars are proud of the fact that they are the second longest-serving club in Senior football ranks, having contested every championship in the top flight since 1980. The only outfit with a better record are Castletown whose unbroken Senior involvement stretches all the way back to 1961.

That Sarsfields golden anniversary gala dinner will take place on Saturday, October 14, in the Talbot Hotel, with dinner served at 8 p.m. Tickets cost €40, dress is formal, and any queries should be directed via e-mail to secretary.sarsfields.wexford@gaa.ie
