GOREY GARDA/W’TOWN 12 13

GOREY SENIOR ladies kicked off their season in Leinster League Division 2 with a home game against Garda/Westmanstown.

Both sides headed into the game looking to get the season off to the best possible start. Unfortunately for Gorey, it was Garda/Westmanstown who came away with the win.

Both sides started strong with defences on top. Gorey made two strong breaks which ended with forward passes.

The first score of the game came from Garda/Westmanstown who intercepted a pass and proceeded to run over the line for the try.

Gorey re-grouped and applied pressure on the opposing attack which led to a turnover, and some strong runs from the forwards led to Caoimhe Molloy crossing over the line for a try.

The first-half continued with both defences applying pressure. Gorey were the next to score with some good back play setting Triona Murray to run free and score a try under the posts which she also converted.

Garda/Westmanstown were determined to put another score on the board before half-time and their efforts were rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts, the last action of the half.

With the half-time score Gorey 12, Garda/Westmanstown 8, the game hung in the balance heading into the second-half.

Both teams attempted to take the initiative with both defences coming out on top for the majority of the half.

Garda/Westmanstown were the team that made the breakthrough with five minutes remaining in the game after some good back play when they crossed over for the try in the corner.

This was to be the last score of the game.

Gorey endeavoured to get an opportunity to score in the remaining minutes but came up just short.

The next game is away to Tullow on Sunday, September 24, at 1 p.m. All support will be welcome.
