Pinpoint accuracy earns Ross bowlers win
NEW ROSS active retired bowlers displayed nerves of steel to land their small bowls with pinpoint accuracy at the National Bowls Competition in Killarney recently, triumphing over Waterford.
Things got competitive in the best way possible at the INEC in Killarney, as a staggering 275 bowlers and 575 attendees converged for the National Bowls Competition, organised by Active Retirement Ireland.
The four victorious teams included New Ross who won the Small Bowls Cup, beating St Paul’s, Waterford, and Cooley, who won the Large Bowls Cup for the first time since 2011 in a poignant but dramatic final – edging out Killorglin in extra ends, and dedicating their win to late captain James Carroll, who passed away earlier this year.
Active Retirement Ireland president Kay Murphy said: ‘Months of organisation has gone into this; so much hard work. It has gone so smoothly and I’m just so happy with the outcome.’
She said: ‘With teams coming from all over the state, it’s just so great to see so many members here together.’
Active Retirement Ireland is the national representative body for over 500 Active Retirement Associations throughout Ireland, with a total membership of over 24,000 people. It aims to end loneliness by offering older people opportunities to enjoy an active and healthy retirement.
