Jim was a thorough gentleman
THE late James (Jim) Power (87) of Horetown, Foulksmills passed away at Wexford General Hospital on Thursday, August 17.
James, who originated from Doonooney, Adamstown was born May 28, 1930 to the late Philip and Catherine Power and was the youngest of 14, who sadly have all predeceased him.
James, who was married to Mary (née Nolan), was a farmer and started out with dry stock and some tillage, a few years later he added sheep to his farm.
He had an eye for good stock and when he bought his own lorry it was routine for him to attend marts weekly from Wexford to Galway, buying and selling cattle and sheep.
James also had a keen interest in dogs, particularly working dogs, which he bought as puppies and trained them himself and was very talented at doing it.
He loved the land and what it had to offer, he was as particular with the farm as he was with himself and everything had to be neat and tidy.
James was a big GAA fan and never missed a televised match, even up to his last few weeks in hospital.
In his earlier days, James played Tug-of-War for his parish and also had a keen interest in playing darts and would take part in the local tops.
James was a sociable person and loved to go out and about, he always had a great interest in what was going on around him, whether it be history, sport or politics.
He would strike up a conversation with anyone and loved telling stories and yarns from his childhood and life experiences.
James enjoyed people coming to visit him, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always had change in his pocket for them.
As ill health caught up with James, he never gave in. He would get up and go out everyday regardless and enjoyed his walks, where he would gladly bump into a neighbour for a chat.
James was a strong, proud, independent man, rich in intelligence and loyal to those close to him. He had fierce bravery, strength and dignity throughout his ill health and his last few days.
James family would like to thank all of those involved in his care over the last few years and in his last few weeks in hospital – Dr Catherine O’Donohoe and the staff in Adamstown surgery, local health nurses in Taghmon health centre, Dr Buckley and his team, nurses, carers and palliative care staff in Wexford General Hospital.
The family would also like to thank relatives and friends who visited James while he was in hospital as it was very much appreciated by both James and his family.
James will be forever and fondly remembered by his wife Mary, his children Tony, Jim, Helen, Terry, Eddie, Noel, Irene and Regina, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, his 24 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and extended family and friends.
