24,000sq ft town ‘advance’ factory goes to tender

- By DAVID LOOBY

A 24,000sq ft advance factory for New Ross has been advertised on e-tenders to be built.

Wexford County Council has paid for the building to be designed and is inviting a company to build it. In turn, the council will lease the premises back over a fixed number of years.

Chairman of the council’s Economic Policy committee Michael Sheehan said: ‘ This is a signal of the commitment to build the larger 24,000sq ft unit and to have it ready for a tenant next year. The e-tender process should be concluded by early 2018 with an expected commencement next spring.’

Cllr Sheehan congratulated the chamber and Wexford County Council for progressing the building. ‘ It is of vital importance that we get suitable premises and then a tenant for the site in Butlersland. The county council has explicitly committed to having the factory ready for tenants in 2018. The whole New Ross area is lagging behind the county in terms of investments, employment and infrastructure. As this process has commenced and hopefully interest is there to partner with the council, I am optimistic that we will have a tenant in the pipeline by the time the construction is complete.’

Cllr Sheehan said plans to develop the factory, a business enterprise centre downtown and some enterprise sites, will boost the local economy.

‘We can ensure that the commercial heart of the town is strong, and that we can thrive after the new roads and bridge is completed.’
