‘Reign of Terror’ is no obstacle for Brendan (66)

-

A NEW ROSS man is set to tackle one of Ireland’s toughest races. Brendan Dunne (66) will take part in one of Ireland’s toughest obstacle course races on Saturday October 21. Brendan is getting set to take on ‘Reign of Terror’ which will see him take on the challenging course that is set over a 5km trail.

Obstacle Course Races typically involves competitors racing to overcome physical obstacles such as steep inclines, rivers and climbing frame traverses. Trails are typically set in muddy and challenging landscapes to ensure a physically and mentally challenging sport.

The Reign of Terror course which is adaptable for everyone from 13 to 70 years of age, takes in both a 5 km and 10km route. Set on an ancient battlefield, the medieval Priory Castle, Kells Cross and Kings River are just some of the historic backdrops that competitors and spectators alike will enjoy.

There are over 60 obstacles such as ‘Strongbow’s Summit’, ‘Motte and Bales’, ‘ Seven Castles Squeeze’, ‘ Warrior Weir’, ‘Victory Hill’ and ‘Kyteler’s Crossing’ that participants can choose to tackle.

‘Although I played a lot of sport in my day, I’ve never done anything like this before and haven’t done any running for 20 years, so this is a massive challenge,’ said Brendan.

‘Signing up for the race was brilliant for me because even though I’m dreading it, I like the idea of having something to aim towards. I have prepared for it by adding a little jogging to my daily walk with the dog and going out on my bike a bit more - I’m no Sean Kelly but I do an hour into town and back at a steady pace so, along with the running, I’m getting there, slowly.’
