From bread to bacon, Wexford companies excel in food awards

STAFFORD Bakeries from Gorey were the big Wexford winners taking seven awards at Blas na hEireann in Dingle at the weekend.

There were four Golds for their Seeded Chia & Carrot Bread, Traditiona­l Barm Brack, Hot Cross Buns and for the Hot Cross Buns they make for Dunnes Stores.

The bakery also won Silvers for their White Sliced Pan and Christmas Pudding and Bronze for their Traditiona­l Vienna.

Other Wexford winners included Gold for Enniscorth­y-based O’Neill’s Dry- Cured Bacon Company who won a Gold for their Dry Cured Back Rashers . Irish Country Meats from Camolin won three awards ; Gold for their Merguez Lamb Sausage, Silver for Mediterran­ean Sausages and Bronze for Inisvale Rack of Lamb 650g (Entered on behalf of the producer by Lidl), Green Valley Farms’ Killowen Farm’s Dunnes Stores Basil Pesto Irish Cream Cheese won Silver and there was a Bronze for the Enniscorth­y company’s Killowen Farm Blueberry Yogurt

Zanna Cookhouse took four awards including Golds for Dunnes Simply Better Irish Free Range Chicken Liver Pate, Goats Cheese, Spinach & Sunkissed Tomato Quiche and Asparagus & Wexford Cheddar Quiche and Silver for Dunnes Simply Better Irish Ham & Mature Cheddar Cheese Quiche

There were also Silver awards for Scup Gelato’s Wexford Strawberry Gelato, Pettitt’s Supervalu Wexfords’ Pettitt’s Natural Sourdough in Wexford, Wild About’s Rhubarb Syrup, in Gorey, Wexford Home Preserves’ for Dunnes Simply Better Handmade Passion Fruit & Mango Coulis and Naturally Cordial Ltd’s for Dunnes Simply Better Irish Wexford Blackcurra­nt Cordial. Two Bronze Awards went to Fancy Fungi for their Wild Mushroom Pate and Wexford Home Preserves’ Simply Better Handmade Seville Orange Marmalade.

The Supreme Champion was Glenstal Irish Creamery Salted Butter from Limerick. The awards are the largest blind-tasted food and drink awards on the island of Ireland.
