Five finals in the pipeline COISTE EXTRA

-

THE PEOPLE Newspapers Coiste na nÓg finals series moved past the halfway point last weekend, but there’s still lots to play for in the coming weeks with five finals currently scheduled for the next six days.

They start off this evening (Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Park, 7.15 p.m.) when Kilrush meet Bannow-Ballymitty for the Gorey Guardian Juvenile football Roinn 2 shield. The New Ross District club will be looking to complete a four-day double, after claiming the football equivalent on Saturday.

The re-arranged Wexford People Minor football Roinn 2 championship final between Ferns St. Aidan’s and St. Joseph’s takes place in St. Patrick’s Park on Wednesday (8 p.m.). The Wexford town side are competing at Minor for the first time since their re-formation, while Ferns are going for the first leg of a potential double.

It’s a double-header of Gorey Guardian Juvenile football championship finals in St. Patrick’s Park on Thursday evening. It throws-in at 6.45 p.m. when Ballyhogue face St. James’ for the Roinn 2 title. The Ramsgrange boys took the hurling crown on Sunday morning against Ballygarrett and are looking to make it two cups in less than a week.

That is followed at 8.15 p.m. by the meeting of Gusserane and Our Lady’s Island/St. Fintan’s in the Roinn 1 shield final. Both of these sides were knocked out of the hurling at the shield semi-final stage, so this is their last chance to pick up some silverware to top off the season.

Finally, at the moment, there’s a big game set for Saturday. Rathnure will meet Blackwater for the Wexford People Minor hurling Roinn 1 championship title at a time and venue to be confirmed. They met in the group stage with Rathnure coming out on top, but Blackwater are unbeaten since so it should be a much tighter contest this time around.

While there was only a handful of non-final fixtures played last week, there were still some huge ties down for decision. There was none bigger than the Wexford People Minor hurling Premier championship semi-final between Ferns St. Aidan’s and Shelmaliers on Saturday.

The Hollymount side topped the group and, theoretically, had the easier assignment in the last four. They got off to a good early start but Chris Turner’s goal gave Ferns a 1-8 to 0-7 interval lead.

Ferns managed to stay ahead throughout the second-half, always keeping their opponents at arm’s length, to book a final spot opposite the winners of the other semi-final, yet to be scheduled, between St. Martin’s and Naomh Eanna.

In Minor football the Piercestown-based side were in quarter-finals action against Dunbrody Gaels and they proved way too strong for their New Ross District opponents. They will now meet Glynn-Barntown, with HWH-Bunclody awaiting the winners of Gorey and Starlights in the other semi.

In the Minor football Roinn 1 shield quarter-final, after extra-time and an unnecessary delay in the match that preceded it, Oylegate-Glenbrien proved just a little too strong for Ballyhogue.

Elsewhere, Ballinastragh Gaels accounted for Our Lady’s Island/ St. Fintan’s in the Enniscorthy Guardian Juvenile hurling Roinn 1 shield semi-final. They will meet Oulart-The Ballagh in the final in the coming weeks.
