Poppy earns nice prize GREYHOUNDS
THE DAWN Meats A2/3 bitch stake final was the feature event on Thursday night at Enniscorthy dog track, and local man Derek Kehoe, now residing in Thurles, came home to score a nice win.
His Slaneyside Poppy got out well from traps and ran on strongly to hold Tycoon Rita snugly by three lengths in a good 28.81.
It made Derek €800 the richer so the journey paid off well, one could say.
Barntown owner George Roche enjoyed a quick-fire double in races seven and eight when his Strictly Sand was an impressive 28.58 best of the night trap to line winner. Meanwhile, his Milands Star was a wide margin winner over the 575 yards, coming home ten lengths clear of the field in a good 31.42.
The Red Mills Future Champions unraced stake starts this week and we will have a full report of all eight heats next week. Judging by the entries it looks a very strong stake and some fast times are expected.
The Oaks continues at Shelbourne Park with the semi-finals this Saturday night. The Karen and Stephen Parker-owned Airdown Rena is the Wexford interest as she qualified in third spot last week to make the last twelve. No doubt she will be doing her best to make the final.
