This week’s competition on Thursday, October 12, sponsored by The Forge Craft Shop, is the last 18-hole of the year. It is also our final presentation night of the year.

Starting at 7.30 p.m., there will be prize-givings for competitions held on September 28, October 5, October 12, golfer of the year, J.J. Devereux, medals and spoons.

Make sure you come along and celebrate the close of another successful, fun and competitive golfing year.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Last Tuesday was a singles stableford competition. When Sheila Hendrick joined the Burrow course she was so good at putting she could probably sink a putt from 40 yards out and was total magic around the greens.

She claimed to me it was from playing in societies on the local par three courses. She obviously didn’t lose her touch last week when she came first with 39 points. Well done Sheila!

On Saturday, July 1, there was a mixed scotch foursomes competition (Kerlogue Cup) sponsored by K.D. Garage. The top 16 pairings from this qualified to play in the club mixed scotch foursomes matchplay championships.

A lot of the resultant pairings ended up being married couples, which in turn led to great fun and rivalry. Newcomers to the club, Michael and Eileen Brosnan, beat Kevin Foran and Kathleen Cullimore in one semi-final; and Ken and Dorcas Maher beat John and Catherine Howard in the other nail-biting semi-final which went to the 19th.

In the end Ken and Dorcas Maher won the competition narrowly - and well done to them. This could end up being a very popular competition for the future providing no family squabbles arise on course!

Tuesday, October 17, is the last of the 18-hole single qualifying competitions (stableford) for the season. Also it’s the last chance for the ring competiton and to reduce your handicap for the year.

Tuesday, October 3, singles stableford (C.S.S. 35 points; 32 points Sunday), sponsored by Essée Boutique: 1, Sheila Hendrick (27), 39 points; 2, Ann Kelly (18), 38 points; gross, Vonnie Kelly (9), 26 points; 3, Paula Stafford (15), 37 points; 4, Bernie Riordan (27), 36 points (back nine); 5, Paula O’Leary (12), 36 points (back nine); Seniors, Moira Fortune (15), 36 points (back nine); Burrow course, Mary Fowler, 30 points.

ROSSLARE

The singles competition in Rosslare on Sunday week was won by Clinton McGuire with 37 points.

Clinton (17) had halves of 17 and 20 to win on the breakdown from Joe Moran Jnr. (6) who, despite birdies at the third and 18th, had to settle for the runner-up spot. Third, also on 37, was Cormac Pettitt (12). Gary Collins (+3) won the gross with a 68 and John Galvin (8) won the veterans with 36 points.

Burrow (twelve holes): 1, Willie White (10), 26 points. Fourball: 1, John Barron (7), Bill Underwood (18), 46 points.

The Walsh Cup, the Club foursomes, came to a close recently.

Quarter-finals: Dan Cash and Vinnie OReilly beat Anthony Duggan and Ned Kinsella; Derek Evans and Boyd Scott beat Phil and Colm Callery; Robin Gardner and Willie Cuddihy beat Eamonn Purcell and Bobby O’Dowd; Philip Balfe and Greg Kelleher beat John Barron and Eddie Mahon.

Semi-finals: Cash and O’Reilly beat Evans and Scott; Balfe and Kelleher beat Gardner and Cuddihy.

In the final experience triumphed over youth with Cash and O’Reilly winning 3/1.

Mixed foursomes club championship: Mick and Eileen Brosnan beat Kevin Foran and Kathleen Cullimore; Ken and Dorcas Maher beat John and Catherine Howard.

Final: Mahers beat Brosnans.

TAGHMON SOCIETY

The society played Rathsallagh G.C. on September 23. If any of you are wondering where the results are, well, I have mislaid them. They may be found, they may not be found. We shall see.

I can tell you that Nicky Cousins won and his handicap is due another overdue slicing, but that may not be enough to stop him such is his form of late. Captain Seamus McLoughlin won the lottery bonus ball.

The next outing is in the opulent Woodenbridge G.C. on October 15 starting at 9 a.m. against our old foes from Dublin, the Kilmacud Crokes Golf Society, for our annual head-to-head for the eighth time with the current score at 5-2 to ourselves.

There is a bus booked and leaving Taghmon at 6.30 a.m. for those who wish to avail of it, and the society’s star player is being picked up in Bree.

Captain Loughy is determined to set an example and to be on time for the first time ever seeing as he should be, what with being Captain and all! Apparently, there is a mystery pit stop on the way home.

NEW ROSS

The September medal competition was sponsored by Stafford Fuels Ltd., and we are grateful to Seamus Power for procuring same. After all the recent rains the going was tough.

Nevertheless, the scoring was good and all three players in the frame all broke 70 nett.

In the end there was a place at the head of the ‘Captain’s table’ for our own Captain, Peter Goggin (17), who took the coveted medal with a nett 67.

Rory Hussey (7) finished in second place, also with a nett 67, whilst Kenny Barrett (21) finished third on 69. The gross prize went to Michael Ryan Jnr. whose 71 was a fantastic round in trying conditions.

The nine-hole weekly stableford competition continues each week Monday to Saturday with a nominal entry fee of only €4, and for an extra €2 you can play the back nine. Prizes will depend on the number of entries each week. Last week’s winner was Willie Whitty.

The Split The Pot fundraiser is a great success and the latest winners were the ‘ Saturday Regulars’ - that group name rings a bell as they took the pot a couple of weeks ago.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We were again blessed with a typical dry and sunny autumn day for our outing on Thursday.

However, a brisk north-westerly wind made for tough going as it didn’t favour players on the vast majority of the 18 holes. After the recent coring and sanding of the greens which paid rich dividends, they played lightning fast and are probably at the moment the best greens in Ireland.

A three-person team composed of Willie Whitty (17), Willie Naddy (19) and Jamesie Wallace (22) took the spoils with a score of 91 points (85 + 6).

Dick Cuddihy (15), John F. Roche (18), Liam Glasheen (20) and Brian Dolan (22) finished second with 89 points.

On 87 points and placed third were Tony Harford (13), Johnny Watson (18), Kenny Irwin (22) and Jim Kehoe (25). We had no nearest the pin prizes as no tapes were in position on holes nine and eleven.

A big number have signed in for our annual trip to our friends in Faithlegg Golf Club on Tuesday, October 17. We will collect the entry fee which is usually around €20 on this Thursday, October 12.

Anyone needing food in Faithlegg can pay on the morning of the competition when tee placings (shotgun start) will be announced before 10 a.m. tee-off. There will be more news on this later.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Last Wednesday saw great scores returned by our ladies. For the first week in October they were fantastic!

The 18-hole stableford was sponsored by Emerald Dry Cleaners, with thanks to Deirdre and Pete Caulfield.

Results: 1, Adeline Fox (28), 40 points; 2, Martina Reidy (31), 38 points; 3, Teresa Foley (15), 37 points; Senior, Liz Roberts (23), 36 points; nearest the pin, Martina Reidy.

On Wednesday, October 11, we will play for a prize sponsored by P.N. O’Gorman Estate Agents, New Ross. Thank you Ann Carton for your continued support. It is 18-hole stableford with a gross prize up for grabs too.

On Wednesday evening we have a prize-giving to present the last few weeks’ prizes. If you are a recipient please attend at 7 p.m. or ask someone to represent you at this important event that acknowledges our generous sponsors.

Lessons on the short game are proceeding with great gusto. We now know the correct way to get out of the bunkers after all the years of building sand castles in them! Thank you to our great coaches, James and Paul; you are super teachers.

To ease things, if competitors in the nine-hole short game would put their cards in the top drawer in the desk in the locker room it would be a help. They will be collected by the lady Captain from there rather than expecting the handicap committee to sort them out.

Don’t forget to find a partner for the open fourball weekend at Halloween (Friday to Sunday, October 27 to 29).

It would be great to see increased ladies’ teams and of course it is more revenue for the club. All we want is some dry autumn weather to ensure a great weekend’s golf.

DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Golf Society played Quinnagh House on Sunday.

Results: 1, Billy Larkin, 37 points; 2, John Cahill, 36 points; 3, Owen Murphy, 34 points.

The par three player of the year competition top two are Nicky Cahill (166) and Lar Morrissey (151), with only two par threes left to play.
