Counsel players make history playing soccer
Good Counsel College New Ross made history on Wednesday in Bunclody with nine boys from 1st Year representing their school in the school’s first ever entry into a soccer competition.
The school, which has been renowned for its GAA and rugby success over the decades, fieled a soccer team for the future who swept aside all teams in their path in a Futsal competition in the north of the county.
A team spokesperson said: ‘Not only did Kyle Rankin, Darby Purcell, Cathal Parker, Eoin Whelan, Cillian Byrne, Sam Norvil, Will Foley, Tadgh Deegan and Evan Cullen represent the predominantly GAA school in soccer, but they went on to win the Wexford Futsal competition, qualifying for the Leinster finals in County Meath next month in the process.’
Thirty secondary schools from across the county entered, but the huge competition did not faze the New Ross schoolboys, who scored 27 goals and only conceded one.
‘The gallant Good Couunsel boys got into the final which ended in a nil all draw and so went to penalties.’
The team out scored their opposition three to two, and won thanks to an amazing save by their goalkeeper.
‘A huge congratulations to all the boys and especially to Mr John Fanning for looking after them so well.’
The success has sparked huge interest in the game at the school and considering its fantastic record in competitions hopes are high that the New Ross ‘Invicibles’ can continue their form in Meath in November.
