NEW ROSS
Even though the days are getting shorter, there is still a lot of activity happening on the course, especially at weekends. Thanks to a benevolent donor of a number of machines, both fairways and rough are showing the results of being cut back recently.
With our greens well-nigh perfect, all players are enjoying their game and some fine scores are being recorded.
In the latest weekend competition, Seamus Aldridge (12) posted a winning total of 41 points. He was closely followed in second place by Ger Maher (14) on 40 points, whilst Eamon Dungan (5) took third with 38 points. It was no surprise that the consistent Michael Ryan Jnr. shot 39 points to take the gross prize.
Category 1 was won by Ger Ronan (5) with 37 points, Category 2 by David Roche (12) with 36 points, and the veteran, Willie Naddy (20), won Category 3 with 37 points.
Entries are now being taken for the winter league which will feature five outings played over 14 holes. The entry fee is €25 and you can place that in the box with your name and your preferred playing time.
The all-week open nine-ole singles competition is going very well and you can play anytime for a mere €4. Depending on the number of entries, prizes will be allotted accordingly - the higher the entries the higher the prizes
Our Past Presidents’ day was an outstanding success with great fun and camaraderie evident among the assembled past holders of office and a number of guests. With a prize for everyone in the audience up for grabs, no one went home without something.
Many thanks to all our competitors, the course staff, the bar and restaurant staff, and especially to manager, Joe Foran, for helping to make for a most enjoyable day.
Coming home in number one spot in the champagne scramble format were John Howlin (11), Paddy Bennett (19) and Seán O hUginn (20) with a great score of 91 points.
Jim Meggs (15), Eamon Walsh (20) and Brian Dolan (23) scored 89 points to finish second, whilst John Kennedy (16), Martin Forristal (20) and Bryan Hennessy (24) were third with 86 points.
NEW ROSS SENIORS
Once again, we were blessed with a fine day for our weekly outing on Thursday. We had a total of twelve teams out in search of the elusive drop of whiskey in well-nigh perfect golfing conditions. With winter rules of placing everywhere in operation, we were expecting high scores and that is what we got. Out of the twelve teams competing, eleven broke the 90 points target in what is now our most popular game - the champagne scramble format which shows the fairness of team selection, giving everyone a chance.
At outward total of 46 points backed up by 53 on the back nine gave John Hosey (14), Kevin Treacy (18), Liam Glasheen (20) and Kenny Irwin (22) the coveted whiskey with a grand total of 99 points - who missed the putt to make it a ton?
The 97 points tally of Pat Traynor (16), John Murphy (17), Dickie O’Neill (18) and Richie Byrne (22) claimed second prize by virtue of a better score over the last six holes (30/29).
Third were Dick Cuddihy (15), Paddy Bennett (19), Les Jastrebski (25) and Martin Burke (26) who scored 97 points also. Nearest the pin on the ninth hole went to Kevin Treacy.
Next week we have our ordinary stableford event but the following week, Thursday, November 2, the Seniors will run a special champagne scramble in aid of St. Vincent De Paul.
The entry fee for this will be €5 per person and we will have a raffle as well. All Seniors are asked to support this very deserving local cause, so bring along a few euro extra with you that morning.

ROSSLARE
The singles competition in Rosslare on Sunday week was a very close affair with only one point separating the first six players.
The winner, once again, for the third time this year, including the Captain’s prize, was Conor Kelly (3) with 40 points.
Conor dropped shots at the second and fourth in an outward half of 18 points. He played the back nine superbly with birdies at the twelfth, 13th and 18th for 22 points and a win on the breakdown from Jason Walsh (8).
Jason was out in 21 points. On the way home he had birdies at the twelfth, 14th and 18th but his failure to score points on the 16th proved costly.
Denis Noonan (4) won the gross with 35 points. He had four birdies in his round but a double bogey six at the fifth ruined his chance of outright victory.
Diarmuid O Raghnaigh (12) won the veterans’ with 39 points, the same score as the third and fourth, Michael Kearns (10) and Syl Farrell (14) respectively.

For a number of years now the annual match on the Saturday of the October bank holiday between the A members and B members was the highlight of the winter season. Now, since the A and B members are full members, this match is not possible.
However, the match continues by reverting back to the old system of many years ago - Flutes versus Yellow Bellies. The Flutes are members born outside Co. Wexford and, needless to say, the Yellow Bellies need no explanation, so the fun continues on Saturday, October 29.

ROSSLARE LADIES
Last Tuesday the best of the weather was in the morning but winners came in from throughout the day.
A total of 61 ladies played with six of them playing on Sunday, our alternate day. Marianne Brennan came in with a great score of 41 points. She had a terrific round with no blanks on her card, five pars and a birdie on the 17th. She dropped two shots from her handicap and will now play off 17.
She was well ahead of everyone else with Gerarde Ryan coming second with 36 points. Well done ladies.
Saturday, October 28, is our annual matchplay competition - Niamh Byrne is co-ordinating the local side and Jeanne Hamill the other. Please contact them by October 18 to put your name down to play.
This will be followed in the evening by our annual dinner dance - all are welcome regardless of whether you play the golf. Please book your spot with Siobhán in catering. WEXFORD LADIES
The winners of the competition sponsored by The Forge Craft Shop, held on October 7 and 12, were: 1, Cathríona Walsh (14), 38 points (front six); 2, Una Robinson (22), 38 points; 3, Catherine Carmody (25), 37 points; gross, Carmel Murphy (8), 25 points; Senior, Bridget O’Neill (29), 31 points; nine-hole, Una Seaver (15), 15 points; nearest the pin, Una Robinson, 81 cm.
Unbelievably, we have come to the end of another golfing season and last Thursday we held the final presentation night when we honoured the best players of the year.
The 2017 golfer of the year is Deirdre Colfer (24). The Irene Dowdall Memorial Cup was presented by Irene’s daughter, Elaine, to Deirdre. We were also delighted to have Irene’s husband, Con, and granddaughter, Rebecca, at the presentation.
During the summer, ladies battled it out in the J.J. Devereux matchplay competition. This year’s winner was Sheila Richardson, the runner-up was Susan Kelly, and the semi-finalists were Helen McGuire and Madge Murphy.
J.J. Devereux’s have been sponsors of this competition for many, many years and we would like to thank John for his ongoing support of ladies’ golf in the club.
There was a new category for the most improved player of the year, and it went to Mary Cashe, who has dropped five shots since the beginning of 2017.
Other prizes presented were: silver medal to Theresa Kehoe; bronze medal to Deirdre Colfer; silver spoon to Madge Murphy.
Prizes were also presented for the golfers with the most birdies in the different categories: Category A (0-18), Helen Robinson with 15 birdies; Category B (19-28), Deirdre Colfer with six birdies; Category C (29-36), Ena O’Donoghue and Bernie Power with three birdies each.
A big thank you to everyone who made this another successful and enjoyable year, and hopefully winter golf will not be too unkind to us!
This Thursday’s (October 19) competition is a 16-hole, three-person champagne scramble.

DONOHOE’S SOCIETY
Donohoe’s Golf Society played Ballymoney on Saturday for our last full course outing, with 25 players in total and Des Pettitt making an appearance.
Results: 1, Nicky Cahill, 36 points; 2, Paul Breen, 36 points; 3, Billy Larkin, 36 points; nearest the pin, Joe Byrne. The longest drive went to the smallest man in the field, Ted Morrissey.
The birdie money was won by Prof Nolan. Billy Larkin won the full course player of the year with his third place finish. Next Sunday we play Carrigleade. Please be there by 8.45 a.m.
BALLYMONEY
There was no Wednesday nine-hole competition due to poor weather.
The weekend singles stableford was played in good conditions. Paul Doyle (13) emerged as winner with 43 points. Frank Layton (17) was second with 38 points.
Stephen Greene (16) was third with 37 points, holding off Kevin Byrne, Anthony Fortune, Andrew Byrne and Martin Conroy on countback.
A reminder to all to get names in for the upcoming winter league.
COURTOWN
Winter time is well and truly upon us now that we have played our second round of the Colman Doyle EBS winter league. We will give an update in next week’s notes.

A total of 32 members played on a very pleasant day for golf in Wexford on Saturday. The course was in good condition for the time of year.

Following the golf, the A.G.M. of the Society was held in the 64. Our new Captain is Jimmy Woods, and Leslie Masterson will be his Vice-Captain.
Paddy O’Dowd and Paddy Dore will be staying on as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, with the outgoing committee re-elected for the coming year.
Following the A.G.M., Jimmy presented the prizes to the winners. He thanked all those who played and all those who helped to make the day so enjoyable.
Our next outing will be to Macreddin Golf Club on Saturday, November 11. All members will be informed in the usual manner.
