WORKMEN SNOOKER

The final of the Declan Ryan snooker tournament took place in the Workmen’s Club, New Ross, between the sponsor, Declan Ryan (-25), and David Shannon (+10).

It is the first time a sponsor has reached the final of his own tournament! The opening frame proved to be a ding-dong battle as it went to the colours, with Shannon winning on the black.

The second frame was tight, with neither player being able to get their rhythm going. Declan got an eleven-point lead going on to the colours, but David potted blue, pink and black to go 2-0 up.

The third was one-sided; as hard as Declan tried, his potting and safety let him down. David took the frame and the match 102-62 to win 3-0.

The club would like to thank Declan for his sponsorship and congratulate David on winning the tournament.

The referee was Tony Bennett. Losing semi-finalists were John Bennett and Nathan Murphy.

WEXFORD MARATHON

Wexford Marathon Club took to the stage at Listowel Endurance Festival recently. The event was run on a 1.19k loop and whoever covered the longest distance won.

There were outstanding performances all round, and all W.M.C. athletes showed incredible physical and mental strength.

In the 24-hour event the men covered massive distances: Jason Kehoe 162 km., Paddy Rowe 152 km. and Paul Duggan 124 km.

A big thanks to Craig Hore of Muscle Maintenance who was instrumental in getting the trio to the finish line, along with the support team of Paddy Rowe Snr., Josephine Kehoe, Tina Mann, Breda Rowe and Sandra Burke.

In the twelve-hour event, James Whitty took the lead early, finishing with 118 km. and taking first place. Anthony Kennelly came second with 95 km. and was third overall. Lorraine McMahon clocked 114 km. and was first in the ladies and second overall. Paul Cullen had a strong run with 77 km.

In the six-hour event, late entrant Anna Fiske had a fantastic run, placing third in the ladies with 55 km.

Thank you to all the support crew who travelled, namely Emily McMahon, Tanya McMahon, Jennifer Neiland, Abi Lambert, Kyle Kennedy and Alan Monahan.

W.M.C. would also like to congratulate Jerry O’Connor on his one hundredth marathon achievement. He was presented with a special medal by Marathon Club Ireland.

Well done to James Whitty on his third placing in the Connemara 100 miles during the summer.

It was a fantastic year for W.M.C. in their second year of setting up, with lots more to come.

KILMORE A.C.

We now continue the preparations for day two, the uneven and Senior championships in Adamstown.

E’CORTHY HOCKEY

The girls’ Under-16 and Under-18 inter-provincial tournaments took place in Belfast recently. Following their performances for South-East, four Enniscorthy players have been selected to take part in trials for the Irish Under-16 national side.

Ciara Kelly, Niamh Ogilvie, Nora McGinty and Leah Kidd will hope to be among those chosen for Brendan Carolan’s side for the Six Nations to take place next summer.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the ladies’ first team was in action at the Astro Active Centre in Enniscorthy, taking on Division 7 league leaders North Kildare.

The home side were a little nervous at the start but quickly settled down, showing stronger inter-play than their opponents, with good link-up between speedy midfielders Laura Bailey and Laura Smith.

Their roving runs provided the forward division of Rynhart and Rudd with a number of opportunities but, aside from forcing two penalty corners in the first-half, Enniscorthy were bereft of ideas.

Instead it was the visitors who took the lead, capitalising on a rare lapse of concentration in an otherwise very solid Enniscorthy defence from a penalty corner on the verge of half-time.

The home side created a glut of chances in the second-half but a very strong performance from the North Kildare goalkeeper kept the Cathedral town side at bay.

Sweeney, Treacy and O’Leary were introduced during the second-half to freshen up Enniscorthy’s approach, but the visitors held out for a win which Enniscorthy felt should have been theirs.

No doubt plenty of lessons will be learned ahead of next weekend’s trip to Sutton Park school to take on Suttonians.

Squad: Leah Chapman, May Wickham, Julie Watchorn, Katie Owen, Jessica Flood, Laura Smith, Laura Bailey, Hannah Sweeney, Marti Rudd, Sonja Rynhart, Anna Flood, Laura O’Leary, Róisín Treacy, Olive Lett.

The men’s first eleven Division 4 match due to take place on Saturday afternoon was called off when Skerries were unable to field a team. Next weekend sees the derby when Donal Doyle’s side visit Wicklow in what should be a typically close-fought encounter.

Enniscorthy forward James O’Sullivan should be in for a warm welcome at East Glendalough school as he returns to his former club for the first time since his move to the county Wexford side.

The men’s second eleven hosted Waterford in a friendly on Saturday evening at the Astro Active Centre. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Cian Hogan taking the lead for the home side before the visitors struck back from a penalty corner with just minutes remaining.

Next weekend sees the men’s second eleven with two tough fixtures as they take on Portrane 2nd away and Bray 2nd at home on consecutive days.

BOWLS LEAGUE E’CORTHY RUGBY

Wexford Wanderers 10, Enniscorthy 31: The Enniscorthy Under-14s travelled to Wexford on Wednesday night and came away with a superb win.

Although the scoreline would suggest that it was an easy victory, credit to Wanderers as Enniscorthy only pulled away at the end with two excellent tries from centre Arron Quigley.

Quigley broke free to score the opening try after just ten minutes after a good carry from Conor Walsh before an off-load to Marco Byrne who put Quigley through. James Kalyta kicked the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

The home team responded with a fine try five minutes later.

Sam Geraghty made a fine surging run and put in Darragh Kehoe for the second try, with Kalyta adding the conversion.

Darragh Kehoe came into the line to add a third touchdown, but Wexford responded almost immediately with a try.

It was a tight affair and an excellent break from defence by James Kinsella, who had Aidan Whelan in support, created the fourth try for Arron Quigley.

Brian Cronin’s strong run down the left set up the fifth try as he had Ian Rigley in support. Rigley found space and time to put Arron Quigley in for the fifth try to secure the win.

They play Wicklow this Wednesday in Enniscorthy at 7 p.m.

Enniscorthy 24, Gorey 19: The Enniscorthys Under-15s produced a sparkling performance to beat Gorey in the Leinster League Phase 1.

Enniscorthy started brilliantly with three tries in the opening 20 minutes. The first came after an excellent break down the right from Stephen Augustine who touched down.

Conal Kervick kicked the conversion for an early lead.

It was a tight match with Gorey scoring to level up matters.

The home team added two further tries before the break, with Ronan Kervick and Conor Murphy the scorers.

Gorey fought back to score another try, and with ten minutes remaining Aaron Doyle grabbed the vital try to secure victory in a really tight game which could have gone either way.

The Enniscorthy Under-16 girls had an excellent start in the second minute of their home clash with Portarlington when Katie Whelan was over the line with their first try of this Leinster Division 1 qualifier.

Whelan followed with further tries in the tenth, 16th and 24th minutes, with two converted by Aoife Codd.

Coming up to half-time with a great pass in play, some quick hands and even better side-stepping moves, Erin Cahill scored the fifth try. It was also converted by Aoife Codd, leaving the score at 31-0.

There was just no stopping these girls, as their teamwork was exceptional.

The second-half started with the leaders showing no sign of letting up on the Port side, and the opposition could not get to grips with the strength of this great bunch of girls.

The game was abandoned shortly after the second-half started as a Portlartington girl got injured. We wish her a speedy recovery.

The next fixture is a November 4 friendly away to Gorey.

Team: Aoife Codd, Ava O’Connor, Ciara Boland, Ciara O’Leary, Eabha Farrell, Erin Cahill, Eva Greene, Katie Foley, Katie Whelan, Kaci O’Connor, Lara Freeman, Lauren Delaney, Lucy Egan, Mia Kelly, Maria O’Dowd, Ruth Bolger, Taragh Cooper, Ellen Rogan, Eimear Fitzgerald, Faye Larkin.
