National Harp Day in Wexford

-

THIS SATURDAY, November 11, marks Ireland’s first National Harp Day or Lá na Cruite, and Wexford’s harpists will be playing a central role, giving ‘pop up’ performances around the county.

In addition, a free harp recital will take place in Wexford Arts Centre on the day at 1 p.m. It will feature the Wexford Harp Ensemble - Cruitirí Loch Garman. The recital has been organised by Gorey-based Aileen Kennedy, a director of the recently established umbrella organisation Harp Ireland, Cruit Éireann.

Workshops, sessions, concerts, talks, and demonstrations of harp-making will take place around the country. Cruit Éireann hopes the day will encourage more people to learn the harp, attract new audiences and recognise the harp’s place in Irish musical and cultural life.

Cruit Éireann was established in 2016 by harpers in collaboration with the Arts Council to support the continuing development of the harp, gain recognition for its status and secure its sustainability.
