FETHARD ST MOGUE’S

The intermediate hurlers played the Dublin Champions, Erin’s Isle in the Leinster Championship last weekend in Dublin. The home side started well and led by four points before their over robust play saw them concede a number of frees which were punished by the accurate Mark Wallace. Erin’s Isle were reduced to 14 men approaching the break and late points from Eddie Power and Ciaran Dwyer saw Fethard lead by two at the break.

Fethard started the second half in whirlwind fashion and points from Mark Wallace, Graham O’Grady and John Tubritt and five points from Ciaran Dwyer were followed by a goal from his brother Mikie. This pushed Fethard 14 points clear midway through the half. Erin’s Isle pulled a goal back before being reduced to 13 men.

A string of substitutions disturbed the Fethard rhythm and the home team got two more late goals which made the additional five minutes of stoppage time a nervous time for the large crowd of Fethard supporters who travelled to the match. However, they came through on a 1-19 to 3-7 scoreline to make history by qualifying for the club’s first ever Leinster Final.

They played John Locke’s of Kilkenny in Wexford Park last Saturday in the final, full report in next week’s paper.
