Fethard race night raises €10k

AROUND €10,000 was raised at a fun-filled night at the races for St Mogue’s GAA Club in Fethard-on-Sea recently.

More than 150 people attended the celebrator­y night at Neville’s pub following quick on the heels of the club’s junior hurling team’s success in the quarter finals against London club John Lockes.

The organisers put on a great show, including a screening of the club’s 1-17 to 2-11 win over their London rivals in the championsh­ip in November.

320 horses were bought on the night, at €20 a horse. Including generous sponsorshi­p, around €10,000 was raised. On top of this the club recently received €57,000 from the lottery for the developmen­t of indoor training facilities.

Club chairman John Hanton said there were up to 60 horses in some races, with three lots of prices. Mr Hanton said: ‘It was a very enjoyable night. People were very generous, especially because of our progress to the All Ireland semi finals on January 20.’

The club are set to build an indoor arena, costing around €100,000, with the money it has raised through funding and fundraisin­g. ‘We put down an astro-turf pitch so we’ll be making that indoor by putting a ceiling over it and extending our dressing rooms.’

Work is due to begin in the first half of 2018 for the club, which has around 200
