Over 1,200 needy families receive food aid in county

- By DAVID TUCKER

MORE than 1,200 needy families in County Wexford have received food aid through the Food Cloud Initiative over the past few weeks, the local campaign run by Councillor Michael Sheehan.

‘It has been going well with out partners in the community across the county and we have broken the 1,200 families threshold,’ Cllr Sheehan told this newspaper, adding that ‘no-one should suffer in silence’.

‘It just goes to show that people are struggling, but are open to assistance and that community spirit is alive and well,’ he said.

Cllr Sheehan said Wexford was the most needy but mainly because it had the highest population concentration, with around 600 families receiving aid, compared to 400 in Enniscorthy and the rest in New Ross. He said that so far the initiative did not have any partners in Gorey but would be delighted to hear from any.

‘By the end of January we will have helped 2,000 families.’

Cllr Sheehan said that anyone in need should contact him, their local authority or their local councillor.

‘It is highly confidential and no one should be under pressure at this time. People should not suffer in silence, just come forward and we wll endeavour to help them,’ he said.

Under the initiative, businesses with short dated foodstuffs are able to contact the organisation to have the suppplies distributed free to those people who need it most.
