END IS IN SIGHT FOR ALBATROS

Demolition may pave the way for rejuvenation of town centre

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

THE PROPOSED demolition of the Albatros factory could pave the way for town centre rejuvenation.

Albatros Ltd has applied to Kilkenny County Council for planning permission to demolish all the buildings on the site of the former Albatros factory. In the application, the company said that all building materials will be segregated and the steel frames on site will be removed and recycled. Concrete will be crushed and retained on the site in Raheen, Rosbercon.

Submissions on the application are due before Thursday and the decision is expected on February 1.

Cllr Michael Sheehan said that any plans to redevelop what is effectively an eyesore in the town is to be welcomed.

‘If the demolition of the buildings on site there is the first step in that redevelopment then its a very positive step for the town. I’d like to see an area action plan similar to what we had previously so we could all liase together to ensure the town developed in a positive way.

‘I’d like to commend all those involved with this and if there is anything that we can do as a council to help see the site be used in a positive way then we can work with them. The demolition of the buildings is a very big step for the town and could lead to great rejuvenation in the area and indeed the whole town.’
