Postman Joe never delivered bills to homes, only presents! Auditions for drama workshop this week

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

POSTMAN Joe St Ledger was always a welcome sight at the door because he never brought bills, only presents!

Joe who retired from An Post at the end of December after 23 years service worked on the parcel route in New Ross town for the majority of his career.

Married to Ann Joe lives in Barrowview Heights and is a familiar face to many after his many years of service. Father to Jonathan and Owen Joe started working with An Post in 1994 and was trained on all routes in the town as he did holiday and sick leave cover.

However eight years later he started working on the parcel route remaining there until his retirement last week.

‘I never brought bills’, said Joe, ‘only presents’.

The jovial postman said he has no immediate plans for his retirement although he said that wife Ann is mentioning taking a cruise so he expects they will head off later in the year.

Joe said that working with An Post was a great job.

‘It was an absolutely fabulous job. I loved it. I met so many interesting and generous people. When I was on the rural route in my early days I never had to buy a spud or a vegetable. Farmers would often throw a bag of spuds, or cabbages or turnips into the van.’ AUDITIONS for this year’s production by New Ross Drama Workshop will take place this Wednesday and Thursday in the CBS Secondary School.

This year’s Spring production will be directed by Margaret Rossiter who previously directed ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller and Martin McDonagh’s ‘ The Cripple of Inishmaan’.

A spokesperson for the group said they were delighted that Margaret had once again agreed to come on board saying her recent productions had been very well received.

On the nights of the auditions Margaret will bring a number of plays and will make her final selection of play based on the best possible casting scenario she can create.

Auditions will take place at 7.30 p.m. on both Wednesday, January 10 and Thursday, January 11, in the CBS Secondary School.

Ideally she would love interested people to attend both nights where possible to allow her to hear different voices and combinations etc. The plays she intends to read are ‘Big Maggie’ by John B. Keane and ‘Haywire’ by Eric Chapell.

Both plays require casts of mixed age profiles with parts ranging in age from mid-20s to mid-70s so all are welcome to attend. More information on 086-0676258.
