Templeudigan run raises €1,950

- By DAVID LOOBY

THE annual Templeudigan St. Stephen’s Day Walk and Run took place in fresh winter weather last Tuesday morning.

This fun social event has been organised by Templeudigan Parish Council for the past three years as a way of raising funds for a deserving charity, while bringing the local community together for the Christmas period.

168 walkers and runners took part in this year’s event – raising €1,950 for Wexford Hospice Homecare team and the walk organisers will be presenting the funds raised to the hospice in the coming weeks.

The large attendance taking part came from across the region Wexford and included many Templeudigan natives who were home for the Christmas period. The event saw participants of all ages from schoolchildren to people in their 70s. The route was an 8km loop starting and finishing at Templeudigan Park and travelling through Ballinabearna and Cummer. While the majority of participants did a leisurely walk there were also quiet a number of competitive runners who were attracted to Templeudigan by some of the hills on the route which have gained a reputation for being challenging to runners. The first runner home was local man Joe Lillis in a time of 28 minutes. He was followed over the next hour by the remainder of runners and walkers.

A generous spread of refreshments was enjoyed in Templeudigan Hall after the walk.

Speaking after the event a spokesperson for Templeudigan Parish Council said: ‘We had a wonderful turn out for our annual St. Stephen’s Day walk and run and were blessed which such good weather for the morning. It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and taking part in a local community activity over Christmas. The event also raised a substantial sum for a deserving local charity. We chose Wexford Hospice Homecare as this year’s charity because they do so much great work for people in County Wexford and so many families will have to avail of their services over the coming year. We would like to thank everyone who travelled a distance to join us in Templeudigan on St. Stephen’s Day.’

The organisers would particularly like to thank the marshals and for the people who provided the refreshments in the hall afterwards.

‘We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Templeudigan next St Stephen‘s Day for what has now become an annual event for so many people.’
