THERE WAS widespread sadness at the recent passing of wellknown former hospital worker John Lacey, who passed away on December 11 following a long illness.

John, the son of the late Willie and Biddy Lacey of Bannow Moor, was aged 63 and was wellknown in Wexford town. He lived at 35 Carriglawn for many years but spent the last few years in Lawson House Nursing Home or at his home in Ballyshane, Wells.

He met his wife Sheila while working in the Talbot and they were married in 1976. Later that year, he moved to his new job in the hospital where he was best-known for his lovely smile and friendly demeanour. No job was too big for him and he was popular with both the staff and patients, many of whom asked for him when they were admitted for care. He loved being with people and helping them.

His career came to an untimely end in 1996 when he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. Despite his prognosis, John fought his illness for over 21 years with great spirit, hope and dignity. Encouraged by his wife and family, he believed that he could fight and survive. He remained in his own home for nine years until, in latter years, he required 24-hour care and moved to Lawson House Nursing Home.

Over the following years, John enjoyed regular weekends in Bannow Moor with his family, or at his new home in Ballyshane, Wells.

Despite everything, he maintained a positive attitude and always had a smile on his face. He saw many birthdays and anniversaries, including his 25th and 40th wedding anniversary, defying all the odds.

John was also a prominent member of the Labour Party and canvassed for the party at election times. He held the role of shop steward in the hospital where he was known as the ‘Minister for Finance’. He proved himself an able trade unionist and was the one who people went to when something needed to be done.

He was also very involved in the community and was an active street coordinator in Carriglawn residents’ association during his time there. He was a big fan of Tony Kehoe’s radio programme and always bought the daily and local newspaper.

He had a keen interest in sport and never missed a hurling match. He was also a big fan of Manchester United, to the extent that he was waked in his Man United jersey. He also enjoyed watching horse racing.

John is mourned by his loving wife Sheila; his sisters Nellie, Breda, Maura, Joan and Margaret; his brothers Mick, Billy, Tom, and Paddy; his aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews; and a large circle of family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Willie and Biddy, and his brother Ger.

John’s month’s mind Mass takes place in the Church of Mary Immaculate and St Joseph, Carrig-on-Bannow, on Saturday, January 13, at 7 p.m.
