YAMA Kids Yoga & Mindfulness is a creative and unique kid’s yoga workshop based in New Ross. They run numerous weekly workshops at The Creative Studio, The Cabin, Sweeney’s Garden Centre, while also providing a mobile service to local pre-schools, schools and libraries in the surrounding area. Amanda and Deirdre Nugent are co-owners of this fun and energetic kid’s yoga service and between them they have over 30 years’ experience working with children and teenagers.

Amanda has a BA honours degree in Early Childhood Studies and has specialised in caring for children with additional needs. She also has a diploma in holistic massage, reflexology and is a certified mindfulness & kids yoga teacher. She has been practicing yoga & mindfulness for over a decade. Deirdre is certified in kid’s yoga and mindfulness and her background is in the medical field. Additionally, both Amanda and Deirdre are themselves parents to young children which serves to enhance their respective approaches in teaching kids yoga.

Yoga is an ancient science that helps to create health and wellbeing by building awareness, strength and flexibility in both mind & body. At Yama Kids Yoga we practice hatha yoga which is a slow-paced and gentle way of practicing yoga. Kid’s yoga can be practised by children of all ages. Mindfulness is a state of being fully awake to life – being aware in the present moment. It is about focusing attention on the present, rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future.

Amanda & Deirdre teach kids yoga & mindfulness to children of all abilities in a nurturing, safe and fun environment. Kid’s yoga can benefit all children and research has shown that it especially helps those who may have ADHD, autism, asthma, bereavement issues, low muscle tone, spina bifida and social anxiety amongst others. Research further shows that introducing children to yoga and mindfulness at a young age can alleviate stress and anxiety while also enhancing their immune system. There is also a correlation between yoga and increases in strength, coordination, flexibility and balance.

Kids learn best when they are having fun, therefore Amanda and Deirdre have designed each class to interweave story, song, exciting adventures, games, poses, breath work, relaxation techniques and mindfulness. This allows children to learn in a multi-sensory environment which explores kinaesthetic, visual, inter and intra personal learning. Yama kids yoga classes are fun and creative which also stimulate children’s imagination, and maintain their natural flexibility. Kid’s yoga also teaches specific calming techniques, breath work and coping skills. Children have fun in a non- competive environment and start new friendships under the warm and nurturing care at Yama Kid’s Yoga & Mindfulness.

We offer kids yoga & mindfulness, family yoga, toddler yoga, teenage meditation and summer camps. We also offer classes in preschools, schools and libraries in the southeast.

Workshops resume on Tuesday the 16th of January and Thursday 18th, children from 4year to 6 yrs. at 4.00 to 4.50 pm and 7 to 14yrs at 5.00 to 5.50 pm. The classes run for 10 weeks excluding school holidays.
