ROSSLARE

Rosslare Golf Club was granted a significant honour last week when it was awarded the Best Hidden Gem in Irish Golf accolade.

This is a great honour for the club and puts it up there with all the major clubs such as Portmarnock, Druids Glen and The K Club. Well done to all concerned. 1, Pat Goff (11), Jim Hennessy (18), 37 points. 1, Paul Boggan (11), 34 points; 2, Tim Murphy (23), 30 points; 3, Eamonn Goggin (18), 30 points; 4, Dermot Walsh (5), 30 points.

ROSSLARE LADIES

The County Wexford Ladies’ Winter Alliance comprising lady members from Rosslare, Wexford, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Courtown Golf Clubs enjoyed the superb condition of Rosslare Golf Club last Monday in excellent weather conditions.

Sadly, the weather was not to last and therefore the regular Tuesday competition did not take place. However, the course is very busy for the weekend with the fourball competition and the winter league now in full swing!

A ladies’ singles stableford twelve-hole competition is scheduled for January 30, and we are hoping for fair weather.

ST. HELEN’S

The action is hotting up in the winter league. After eight rounds, teams Brian, Aileen and Simon have opened up a healthy gap on the rest of the field.

With only rounds nine and ten to play before the final qualifiers, time is running out for the chasing pack.

1, Jim Brauneisen (10), 24 points; 2, Jim Egan (14), 23 points (countback); 3, Michael Vaughan (13), 23 points.

1, John Carr (17), 24 points (countback); 2, Pat O’Connor (2), 24 points (countback); 3, Brian Dalton (16), 24 points (countback). Declan Murphy (7), 24 points.

NEW ROSS NEW ROSS LADIES

1,

1, Pat O’Connor (2), 29 points; 2, Jonathan Dunne (9), 26 points (countback); 3, Jimmy Kearney (10), 26 points.

Saturday, February 3, winter league round nine; Sunday, February 4, open eleven holes singles stableford; Saturday, February 10, winter league round ten; Sunday, February 11, open eleven holes singles stableford.

Thankfully last week’s weather was much more pleasant and the course was in great condition after the recent rain. Well done to all the groundsmen.

1, Andrew Ryan (4) and Declan Clarke (12), 43 points (last nine); 2, John Hartley (23) and Jack Murphy (16), 43 points; 3, John Aylward (17) and Tom Duggan (18), 42 points (last six).

It was great to have a day’s golf on Wednesday, January 24. We were having cabin fever with the weekly wet Wednesdays and felt very cheated when the men’s days were dry!

The 14-hole stableford competition was hotly contested with the scores only a nose ahead in each place.

1, Margaret Rossiter (27), 28 points; 2, Tess Ryan (24), 27 points (last seven); 3, Teenie Murphy (29), 29 - 2 = 27 points (last seven).

Because of the January conditions, we will extend the third round of the winter league until January 31. We are well ahead compared to 2017 so there is no rush to finish this fine league.

The top teams are close so it’s all to play for, and those languishing at the bottom have a chance to rattle the cage still.

Funnily though, some experienced golfers have forgotten minutiae like signing the book and therefore losing out on good scores for their team. Ye wouldn’t be kept in the Premier League!

Sign the book girls and fill a separate card... easy peasy!

The Captains’ drive-in is scheduled for Sunday, March 11. This year we are going all out to make this a great club day.

The format is 18-hole mixed one man, one woman with a shotgun start so that players will return about the same time. We will have food then with the presentation of prizes.

The B.R.S. is set up for the event from mid-morning so get your partner and book on line. We hope to have a great turn-out and to make the day a special club social event.

Entry (TBC) will include the cost of our meal and we hope to invite sponsors to join us.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

A bright, dry day saw ten teams venture out on Thursday when the course was drying out fast, leading to some fine scores being recorded.

The threat of teams being put on the clock paid dividends, with all finishing well within the four-hour guideline.

With the bunkers still out of play, all teams benefited. Even though often caught in the hazard, they had a free drop out.

Taking the honours with a great score of 101 points were Johnny Browne (12), Dan Quigley (20), Kenny Irwin (22) and Jim Kehoe (25).

After a countback over the last nine holes (47/44), Ray Shannon (14), Willie Naddy (20), Aidan O’Connor (20) and Tom Kent (26) took second place with a final tally of 97 points.

A three-person team of Eamon Delaney (16), Mick Gannon (18) and Larry Shannon registered the same score (91 + 6) to finish third.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Tony Sexton on the ninth hole and Johnny Browne on the eleventh.

On the board for February are Martin Forristal, John Joe Murray and John Murphy.

All members, please support Split The Pot fundraiser for a €2 entry fee with the hope of a larger dividend if you come up in the draw.

There is a very competitive entry fee to New Ross Golf Club available for 2018, so again canvass your friends who might like to join.

64 SOCIETY

The 64 Golf Society outing in the European Golf Club, Brittas, took place on Saturday, January 27.

The course was in excellent condition for the time of the year. A total of 43 members played, with four visitors.

1, Colman Doyle (24), 32 points (last nine); 2, Paddy O’Dowd (10), 32 points (last nine); 3, Kieran Murphy (15), 32 points; gross, Colm Sheehan (4), 27 points; 4, Pierce Dooley (18), 31 points (last nine); first nine, Brendan Travers (10), 18 points; second nine, Donal Sheehan (15), 16 points.

Following the outing, at the presentation in the 64 the Captain thanked all those who played and all those who helped to make the day a success. He thanked our sponsor, Robert O’Connor, for the wonderful array of prizes.

Our next outing will be to Palmerstown Golf Club on Saturday, February 24. All members will be informed in the usual manner.

Three members are tied at the top of the golfer of the year after three events, with Colm Sheehan, John Fitzgerald and Paddy O’Dowd all on 50 points.
