Ferns fight back to deny Forth in thriller Magical Moyne into the last eight

-

Ferns United 3, Forth Celtic 2 (AET): In arguably one of the most exciting cup ties played in recent years, Ferns eventually booked a second round meeting with Corach Ramblers in the most dramatic of fashion.

This re-fixed cup tie was even more dramatic than the previous week’s abandoned game, with Forth enjoying the better of the first-half and taking a well-deserved lead through Sarah Siggins to be in front 1-0 at the break.

When Natasha Byrne-Rossiter made it 2-0 early in the second-half, it was shaping up for a major shock, but Ferns are not one of the most successful teams in the county by rolling over and quickly pulled a goal back through Rachel Collier.

Forth had continued to press forward but did not convert their chances, and they paid the price in the 87th minute when Mary Dwyer scored the goal to bring the sides level and the game into extra-time.

Both sides effectively cancelled each other in the two extra periods and, as the game looked to be heading to penalties, Ferns swung in a corner in the final seconds and Aoibheann Myers headed the ball into the Forth net to send her side through to a second round meeting with Corach Ramblers.

Forth were left to rue their missed chances, but both sides can be proud of their contribution to what proved to be a very competitive cup tie. Well done to the large crowd that turned out in the unpleasant weather to watch this encounter.

Cloughbawn A.F.C. 3, Camolin Celtic 2: The home side have moved into contention for honours in this division after a poor start to the season, but had to work very hard to take all three points in this game against Camolin.

Aisling Byrne opened the scoring for the visitors, but Tina Cullen levelled before Aisling scored her second to restore Camolin Celtic’s lead.

Once again it was Tina Cullen who scored to bring the sides level with a well-taken shot that deflected off a defender and into the net to restore parity at the break.

In a very close second-half, both defences dominated but it was Cloughbawn who got the breakthrough when Ulrika Dreelan slotted the ball past the ’keeper for what proved to be the winning goal.

St. Leonards 1, Fastnet Rovers 1: Both these sides are well in contention in their respective divisions but after a highly competitive game, they had to be content with a point each.

Aoidín Kiely was on target for the home side while a Joanne Jordan goal earned Fastnet a well-earned point.

Shelburne United 0, St. Cormac’s 6: St. Cormac’s kept the pressure on leaders Stoney when they travelled to Shelburne and ran out 6-0 winners.

Lorraine Fortune is showing a return to scoring form as she netted a hat-trick, with Vivienne Gahan scoring twice, while Claudia Doyle was also on target for the winners.

Seaview United 0, Moyne Rangers 8: Moyne comfortably progressed to the quarter-finals of the cup when they travelled to Fethard and beat the young home side 8-0.

Cassie O’Rourke scored a hattrick, with Leah Shannon and Kaitlyn Conroy adding two each while Katie Whelan also got her name on the scoresheet.

Curracloe United 9, North End United 0: Premier leaders Curracloe United proved far too strong for North End and moved into the last eight courtesy of this 9-0 win.

Polly Redmond continued her good scoring form as she claimed a personal tally of seven, while Zara Corrigan and Caoimhe Carley were also on target.

Bree United 3, Forth Celtic 0: Division 2B side Bree United booked their place in the quarter-finals when they overcame Forth Celtic 3-0 and could be a team that the Premier outfits would like to avoid in the draw.

Aoife Fortune scored twice with Grace Donohue also finding the net.

Wexford Youths 2, St. Joseph’s 0: In a very closely-contested cup tie played on an excellent surface in Ferrycarrig, Wexford Youths eventually made it through to the quarter-finals.

Jane Murphy and Cliona Kearney were on target for the home side, although St. Joseph’s were well in contention for long periods of the game.

Shelburne United 4, New Ross Celtic 8: This cup tie saw Ross Celtic eventually come out on top in this twelve-goal thriller.

Milly Sutton and Caitlin Gaffney both scored one each for Shelburne, with Neala Barron adding two, but an incredible seven goals from Aoife Kielthy and one from Maeve Bookie saw Celtic through to the last eight.

Aughrim Rangers 4, Adamstown 0: These two sides are involved in a three-way tussle at the top of Division 2A, but it was Aughrim who came out on top in this cup tie to make it through to the quarter-finals.

Two goals from Chloe Sheehy and one each from Ciara Connolly and Sarah Doyle saw the Wicklow side through.

All Blacks 0, New Ross Town 4: Holders New Ross Town are doing all they can to retain their cup as they travelled to fellow Premier side All Blacks and came away 4-0 winners.

Ella Nolan and Emma Rossiter scored a goal each for New Ross Town, with Leah Ryan finding the net twice.
