NEW ROSS

Sunday’s 18-hole strokeford competition for men saw a return to form for Seamus Wall.

Seamus, who has been out of the prizes for quite some time, had a very good winning score of 17.5.

We are grateful to the Saturday regulars who sponsored the event.

Results: 1, Seamus Wall, 17.5; 2, Patrick Bennett, 18; 3, Paul Whelan, 18.5; gross, Michael Kelleher, 21; Cat. 1, Martin Kehoe, 19.5; Cat. 2, Ger Maher, 22; Cat. 3, Brian Teague, 19.

The presentation for this will be made on Sunday, March 4, at 5 p.m.

The presentation will also include winners in the winter league outing five, the four-person waltz which took place on February 11, and also last week’s 18-hole v. par.

All those who are due prizes are expected to attend out of respect to the Captain and sponsors.

Next Sunday, weather permitting, there is an 18-hole singles sponsored by the Kennedy Boutique Hotel, New Ross.

The following Sunday we have the Captains’ drive-in. The response to this has been excellent and there are only a handful of places left to fill from the required 46 men and 46 women.

The event will be followed by a three-course meal and presentation.

The next Split The Pot draw will take place following next Sunday’s presentation.

Team managers are now in place and the club will be involved in a total of 13 inter-club competitions over the next few months. This will be a busy time for all involved.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had dancing with the stars on Thursday when we played a champagne waltz format in our weekly competition. The sambas and the salsas were out as we went strictly with a one-two-three score on alternative holes from one to 18.

There were many fancy shots played and many unusual manoeuvres also as the twelve teams battled it out for the coveted first prize. Some displayed fancy footwork on the fairways whilst others showed perfect timing, especially around the greens.

In the end the result of this novel format saw Dick Cuddihy (15), John F. Roche (21), Colin Casey (22) and Brian Dolan (23) emerge winners with a great score of 100 points.

On 96 points and placed second were Hughie O’Connor (18), John Fitzpatrick (19), Sean O hUginn (21) and Frank Boyle (23).

The third spot went to a three-person team composed of Eamon Delaney (16), Dickie O’Neill (18) and Tom Kent (26) with 93 points (87+6).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Andy Ronan on the ninth hole and John Murphy on the eleventh.

Prior to the draw for teams, we observed a minute’s silence in memory of our late lady Captain, Maeve Wilson, whose untimely passing was deeply regretted by all.

What was confirmed was that we continue with our early starting time of 9.40 a.m. as the days get longer and it’s nice to get out early. Best wishes from all the Seniors go to founder member, Luke Power, who is hospitalised at the present time.

Congratulations to the popular Eddie Keher on his well-deserved award of ‘Freedom of Kilkenny’ at a function on Saturday.

On the board for March are Mick Brennan, Tony Sexton and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan.

We are at round four of the winter league and this has to be played by March 7.

Sharpen your shortgame will commence again in midMarch. Those who are interested, please put your name on the sheet in the locker room before March 7.

The scene is set for a thrilling finish to the winter league in Rosslare, with only four points separating the first three teams.

Going into the last weekend, a scramble, the team of Robert Redmond, Charlie O’Gorman, Liam Bennett, Pat Wright, Julie O’Brien and Jean Cullinane has now fought its way to the top of the leaderboard and is tied with the first round leading team of Eilish Kavanagh, Tom Connon, John Hanrick, Kevin Collins, Mary O’Shaughnessy and Syl Farrell.

Both are on 153.5 points, and in third position four points behind is the team of Bob Quilty, Rory Deane, Anne Redmond, Con Murphy, Jim Hennessy and Irene Walker.

ROSSLARE LADIES

The Tuesday, February 27, competition is a team of three yellow ball, with one yellow ball per team, and one player to play the yellow ball per hole in rotation.

Two scores count on each hole, and one of those scores must be the yellow ball. The player with the yellow ball gets double scores.

If the yellow ball doesn’t score on a hole, only one score is to count from the remaining two players for that hole. If the yellow ball gets lost, only one score is to count on that hole from the remaining two players.

All subsequent holes count the two highest scores, i.e. no yellow ball...no double scores! Mind your yellow balls!

The final of the winter league takes place on Sunday, March 4. The competition is a team of three scramble, strokes, over 16 holes and each player is required to have a minimum of three drives to count. The excitement is building!
