Poulfur pupils game for nest boxes project
POULFUR NS pupils recently built more than 20 nest boxes which have been helping birds to survive the Beast from the East.
The timbre was provided by Walls Sawmills of Ballycullane and prepared by Bevel furniture in Saltmills.
Aided by Fethard Game Protection Association members, the boxes were made within an hour at the school in mid-February.
The game club members visited 6th Class pupils and over the course of an hour left them with the materials to build the nest boxes. Local ornithologist and cameraman Liam Ryan spoke about how to care for birds in winter and where best to erect nest boxes which are used by smaller birds.
Project Coordinator William Auld said the project has been running at Poulfur NS for a number of years and is very popular with the pupils.
‘We let them make and assemble them so they have a sense of ownership and pride in it. We have the timbre cut to size beforehand and a number of our members visit the school as they are being assembled by the pupils.’
