Under-17 panel the runners-up

Fine show in Leinster tests

-

THE WEXFORD Under-17 inter-county badminton team travelled to Baldoyle to take part in the Leinster competition.

In the morning session Wexford were in a group of four with Louth, Kilkenny ‘B’ and Kildare ‘A’.

First Wexford played Louth and won 5-0, and they followed it up with a victory over Kilkenny ‘B’ on the same scoreline.

The last game in the morning group saw Wexford lose to Kildare ‘A’ 3-2.

The results of the morning saw Wexford being placed in Division 1 for the afternoon session. This again was a group of four with Dublin, Kildare ‘B’, Wexford and Kildare ‘A’.

First up in opposition was Dublin, with Wexford winning on a 3-2 scoreline.

Wexford followed that with another 3-2 success, this time against Kildare ‘B’.

The last game of the group saw Wexford losing to Kildare ‘A’ 4-1. This left Wexford as the runner-up in Division 1, a great achievement for a young team.

The Wexford team comprised Paddy Nolan, Evan Byrne, Mickey O’Regan, Aine Crowe, Bethany Trankner and Anne Nolan.

The Class 3 and Class 5 Wexford inter-county teams were also in action in the preliminaries of the Leinster competition.

The Class 3 team travelled to Carlow Lawn Tennis Club and qualified for the finals in Dublin. Well done to the team of Joe Ryan, Declan Carroll, Shane Kehoe, Catherine Canavan, Tara Kehoe, Helen Butler and Aime Butler.

The Class 5 team travelled to St. Laurence’s G.A.A. Centre near Athy, where they also qualified for the Leinster finals.

The team was John Cogley, Aquino Thomas, William Butler, Anthony Wadding, Martina Cogley, Caitríona Walsh, Bríd Kehoe, Louise Howe and Maryse Diaz.

Congratulations to both teams on very successful performances, and best of luck in the finals. THERE WAS no greyhound racing anywhere in Ireland last weekend due to the snow. Hopefully most tracks will get back racing this week.

There was some sad news over the weekend, as the death occurred on Saturday of well-known greyhound owner and supporter Tony Butler from Piercestown, a member of a leading Wexford sporting family.

A former hurler, Tony has been involved with greyhounds for many years with his son, Anton, and their Telex prefix has been many times to the fore. Tony’s brother, Liam, is also a successful owner and trainer and was a former inter-county hurler.

The sympathy of the greyhound community is extended to the extended Butler family on their sad loss. May Tony rest in peace.

There was a nine-race card on offer on Thursday week at Enniscorthy Greyhound Track, and local trainer John Kavanagh had a night to remember, recording a fine treble.

The first of his winners came in race two when even money favourite Black Jet Hawk got out well from his trap two box and led to score a snug win in a time of 29.62.

Race six secured his second winner when Falcon Blitz also got out well and ran out a clear six lengths to the good at the line in a time of 29.40.

Race eight saw the treble completed as Cow Lane Lad was quick away and ran out a very easy five and a half lengths winner in a useful time of 29.18.

There are some nice stakes coming up in the coming weeks, with two unraced stakes and a 600 yards novice stake.

There will also be a big night’s racing to note for Easter Sunday as there will be an Easter bonnet competition, with free entry to all ladies wearing a bonnet?

A good night’s racing will be on offer, with semi-finals and finals of several very good stakes.
