Gleeson outlines reasons for move
JESS GLEESON was in contact with us during the week to outline the reasons behind her high-profile move from the Continental Tyres National Women’s League holders, Wexford Youths Women, to their arch-rivals Shelbourne.
‘What most people are unaware of is that the move to Shelbourne was initiated prior to the 2017 season,’ the talented Waterford-born international explained.
‘At the time out of loyalty to the incoming manager I decided to stay one more season with Wexford to cause as little disruption as possible, however my decision to leave Wexford Youths was made long before the 2017 season had ended and when Shelbourne came calling again it was just an opportunity I couldn’t turn down a second time,’ she added.
‘I have played international football for many years and I felt a new challenge was required if I am to have a chance to get another go in the senior set-up.
‘My decision to leave Wexford Youths was purely football based and at this stage in my career I have to do what’s best for myself as a player, and personal feelings towards Wexford Youths players or management do not come into it.’
Gleeson’s move formed a very interesting backdrop to the scheduled start of the new league campaign last Sunday when Wexford were due to host Shelbourne in Ferrycarrig Park.
However, the game was postponed due to pitch conditions, but their paths are certain to cross several times before 2018 is over.
