GRAND MARSHAL TOM

In the inaugural Rutherford, New Jersey, USA. St Patrick’s Day parade held on Sunday, March 4, Ballyneale born Tom Flynn was the Grand Marshal. Led by the St Columkille United Pipe Band and featuring seven other marching and pipe bands the cavalcade of some sixty-one floats plus the limousine bearing Tom and his wife, Pauline, went down Park Avenue to loud applause from the watching hundreds on the pavements.

The president of the Rutherford Irish/American Association, Mr Eric Moore in his address said about the day honouring Ireland’s National Saint, ‘It’s a family orientated event to celebrate the culture and heritage between America and Ireland and we’re proud to have as our Grand Marshal a native son of Ireland, Mr Tom Flynn’.

After the event I had a phone call from Tom expressing his delight at being chosen to head up the parade in his adopted New Jersey abode and also that the event went so well with the stirring music of the pipe bands filling the air around Rutherford.

He asked me to convey his sincere thanks to the Tullogher-Rosbercon GAA Club and in particular its secretary, Mary Fitzgerald, for sending him out signed Tullogher-Rosbercon Club and Kilkenny County jerseys both of which are in the famed black and amber colours. They were much appreciated and will take pride of place in far-away America.

As a result of this success in having an inaugural parade the organisers now hope to make it an annual event for the Irish emigrants and their off-spring in Rutherford, New Jersey, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves on Sunday, March 4.
