UNPRECEDENTED SNOW

The people of Newbawn like those in many other parts of the country witnessed the biggest amount of snow to have fallen in over 40 years from Wednesday, February 28, to Saturday, March 3, that made it impossible to travel even by foot as the wind created drifts of several feet high. Weekend Masses were cancelled in all the local churches for the first time, local schools were closed, and transport was at a stand-still.

Animals and birds also suffered, till the eagerly awaited arrival of rain and a taw. Some remnants of storm Emma and ‘The Beast from the East’ still remain by the roadside and around farmyards over two weeks after the unprecedented weather conditions.

RECENT DEATH

The passing of Matt Banville, Assagart, on Friday, March 2, was the cause of much regret around the Camross, Newbawn, Foulkesmills area. He was in his 92nd year and had been in failing health in recent times. He was well known over a wide area and well respected. His burial took place in Kilgarvan cemetery last Thursday following requiem Mass in Little Cullenstown church. Sympathy is extended to his sister Peg and other relatives and friends.

He was pre-deceased by brothers, Tommy, Paddy, Jack and Lar, sisters, Beth and May. May he rest in peace.

PARISH DRAW

The lucky winner of the February 50/50 Newbawn parish draw was Biddy Foran from the Rock lane Carrigbyrne. She received a cheque for €500. The next of the monthly draws will take place after Mass on Sunday, March 25, when another €500 must be won. Tickets for the draw costing just €5 are on sale from Newbawn parish council members.
