Big field for 10th running of half marathon
THE popular Pettitt’s SuperValu Wexford Half Marathon & 10km has just been launched, preparing the ground for the 10th running of the race which is expected to generate €250,000 for the town and districts.
The annual event, run in association with DMP Athletic Club, is due to take place on Sunday, April 29, and always attracts runners, joggers and walkers from all over Ireland and beyond to enjoy one of Ireland’s premium races. ‘ The Wexford race has become a weekend away for many running groups and running clubs,’ said race organiser Eoin Ryan, ‘it is expected that the race will generate over a quarter of a million in revenue for the town and surrounds.’ In local circles the race has become a big social event on the Wexford sporting calendar not to be missed. Many train especially for the event including the three Wexford Leaders Dick Walsh, Anastasia Cash and Cormac McManus This year sees the biggest ever entry taking part with 1,900 competitors, the race sold out months in advance due to the popularity of the trilogy collectors medal. ‘ There was unprecedented demand this year for our 10th anniversary’ said Eoin Ryan. Next year they hope to break the 2,000 entry barrier,’ he said.
