Lions with specs appeal

-

New ROSS Lions CLUB are asking people with glasses they don’t need to donate them as part of their World Sight Day campaign.

Lions World Sight Day was created to recognize and reinforce the importance of eradicating preventable blindness.

New Ross Lions Club President Ray Lawlor said the body are once again running a collection of eyeglasses and sunglasses for recycling as this years’ project for World Sight Day. Once collected all glasses are taken to a central warehouse for sorting and grading, before being sent on to Lions Club Projects in the Third World. Up until April 6 eyeglasses and sunglasses can be dropped off at any of the following collection points: Eyecatchers Opticians, John Street, John Byrnes Opticians, The Quay, Burke’s Chemist, South Street, French’s Chemist, North Street, Ray Lawlor’s, North Street and Caroline Hair Creation, North Street.

Mr Lawlor said that slight damage to the frames is not a problem as repairs can be carried out on them.

‘It’s been two years since we ran this collection. On the last occasion it was a great success. We were surprised at the number of eyeglasses and sunglasses collected. We shipped out over 2000 pairs. They are couriered for free to a grading and sorting location in the UK. It would seem to us that people like the idea of old glasses getting used and helping those in need. We would love to be able to send 2,500 glasses this time.’
