PRIDE OF LIONS

Talented children from all over the county responded to a call by Wexford Lions Club for artistic entries in the annual open submission exhibiton at Wexford Arts Centre.

Young people of all ages created paintings and drawings for the show which is continuing in the Cornmarket Centre until Saturday, March 31.

The children’s exhibition can be seen in the upstairs gallery of the venue while the adult entries are on display downstairs.

The winners were selected by the award-winning artist Bernadette Doolan who compliment­ed the young artists on the creative standard and imaginatio­n of their work.

The winner of the 5-7 years category was won by Rory Codd with his drawing of Little Cottage in pencil and ink on board; Callia Dunphy won in the 8-9 years category with ‘ The Hypnotiser in pen and ink on board; Sarah Phylan won in the 10-11 years age group with her work ‘Featherhea­d in crayon and watercolou­r on board; Muireann Lanigan won first prize in the 12-13 years age group with ‘Flight of Peace’ in pen and ink on board; Lara Guthrie was the winner in the 14-plus category with her portrait of ‘Rowan’ in acrylic on canvas. All the children’s prizes were sponsored by Spectrum Art Supplies in Selskar, Wexford. The overall winner of the Wexford Lions Club Perpetual Tropy was eight years old Ruth Thompson for her colourful painting of The Tiger That Came to Tea in acrylic on canvas. The young artists attended a launch ceremony in the Arts Centre. The event was addressed by Ger Cashman, the President of Wexford Lions Club which has held the exhibition/ competitio­n for the past 28 years. Lions Club member and Arts Centre Board chairperso­n Rosemary Hayes said the exhibiton reaches a higher standard every year.
