OUR NEW BISHOP

Our new Bishop of Ossory, Monsignor Dermot Farrell, a native of Co Westmeath and parish priest of Dunboyne in Co Meath was ordained in a ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral Kilkenny on Sunday, March 11. The Principal Consecrator was Archbishop Dermot Martin of the Dublin Diocese assisted by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Jude Okolo.

The homily at the ceremonies was delivered by Fr Dan Cavanagh, parish priest of Rosbercon. In it he extended a warm welcome to Bishop Farrell on behalf of the people of Ossory. ‘We pray, Dermot, that you will trust our friendship and that as we work together you will find that we want what you want for our diocese. We thank you for taking on the challenge of becoming our new Bishop’. Fr Cavanagh also paid tribute to Bishop Farrell’s predecessors, Laurence Forristal and Séamus Freeman both of whom were present in the cathedral.

The new Bishop returned thanks to all who had contributed to the impressive ceremony including church of Ireland Bishop John Neill and said the role of a Diocesan Bishop was ‘to be a father to his people, a brother to his priests and a witness of Jesus Christ to the world’.

KILKENNY GREENWAY

Kilkenny County councillors have approved the part eight application for a 22km-long Greenway stretching from Rosbercon to Ferrybank just outside Waterford City. This proposed walkway would be on the old railway line between the two afore mentioned villages and CIE or Irish Rail are willing to enter into a contact with Kilkenny County Council with a potential lease of some 20 years. The council would be responsible for the public liability for the whole route which according to their members should be called ‘the Kilkenny Greenway’ seeing as the route ambles through South Kilkenny. Based on similar projects elsewhere, the kind of cost would be in the region of €7-10 million.

TRÓCAIRE

The focus of this year’s Trócaire Lenten Campaign is, ‘Until Love Conquers Fear’. This charity is working tirelessly to re-settle migrants and refugees in Africa. We are all asked to help and give financial aid to aid in this very worthwhile cause. The Trócaire boxes have been delivered to all homes in the parish and all are urged to put some little money into them each week during Lent.
