Gold rings thief is remanded in custody

-

A 19-YEAR-OLD New Ross man who stole 112 gold rings valued at €35,000 has been remanded in custody.

Ryan Healy, of 11 Fairgreen, Irishtown, New Ross, came before Judge Cormac Quinn at a sitting of Wexford Circuit Criminal Court last week.

He pleaded guilty to robbing Denise Power of 112 gold rings valued at €35,000 and €115 in cash at Forristals Jewellers, South Street, New ross, on July 11, 2017.

He also pleeaded guilty to robbing Nadia Petrusevic of a sum of cash at Boody’s, New Ross, on September 29, 2017.

When the case came before the court, defence counsel Rosario Boyle told the court her client has had a difficult childhood. At present, he suffers from a number of medical and psychiatric issues.

Ms Boyle said Healy had left school at an early age but that in recent weeks had returned to education at Cloverhill prison where he is on remand.

Ms Boyle asked that a psychiatric report be prepared while he is in prison, adding that a probation and welfare report would also be of assistance to the court.

Judge Quinn, on the application of prosecuting counsel Sinead Gleeson, said he would adjourn the matter to April 10, while he would remand the defendant in custody for sentencing to May 4 next.
