Another cap for Ryan
RYAN DELANEY was introduced as a half-time substitute as the Republic of Ireland Under-21 side defeated Iceland 3-1 in a friendly on Thursday. The Rochdale defender replaced Ryan Sweeney at half-time as the boys in green warmed up for today’s UEFA European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan with a morale-boosting win.
Meanwhile, Good Counsel (New Ross) past pupil Thomas O’Connor played in central midfield for the full 90 minutes as the Under-19 international team shared the spoils with Slovakia on Wednesday.
The Southampton player and his colleagues drew 1-1 thanks to a 76th-minute penalty in this UEFA Championship Elite Round clash.
And he got another 90 minutes under his belt in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Kosovo to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the main event.
Another Wexford name in the limelight is Michelle O’Neill who has been appointed as one of the assistant referees for the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final between SK Slavia Praha of the Czech Republic and VFL Wolfsburg from Germany.
The game will take place in the Eden Arena in Prague this Wednesday, with Michelle (right) part of a team that also includes referee Lina Lehtovaara from Finland and assistant Kylie McMullan from Scotland.
She has also been appointed to an international game in Finland one week later, while she will be fourth official at the Ireland v. Holland qualifier next month.
