‘Easy Lover’ came about after Collins was hired as producer for ‘Chinese Wall’, the third solo album from Earth, Wind & Fire singer Philip Bailey. According to Collins, the song was written during a jam at the end of one of their recording days. ‘We recorded it that night so we wouldn’t forget it,’ he said. The song was an immediate winner on release, reaching No 1 in a number of countries, including the UK and Ireland. In spite of US sales exceeding a million, ‘Easy Lover’ did not make the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100 as it failed to dislodge Foreigner’s power ballad ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’.
