Eighth Amendment billboard to be removed by Wexford FC
LEAGUE OF Ireland soccer club Wexford F.C. has agreed to remove signage pertaining to the upcoming Eighth Amendment referendum that has been placed on one of the club’s advertising billboards on the N11.
The club’s billboard, which is visible from the main road, features club fixtures on one section of the board while the remainder of it is deemed advertising space.
Last week, social media commentary was rife over an advertisement for Independents 4 Change, of which TD Mick Wallace is a member, which read: ‘170,216 have travelled. Your mother. Your sister. Your daughter. Her choice. Vote Yes.’ While many commentators voiced their support for club, others believed that politics should not come into sport.
The club released a statement at the weekend saying: ‘In response to media enquiries and social media commentary in the last couple of days, Wexford FC wishes to advise that it is a community, fan owned football club and not affiliated to any political cause or point of view.
‘Advertising space on the N11 billboard is made available to third parties as one of the many ways of funding the club, but any products or messages that feature on the sign are not associated with Wexford FC nor should they be. As this sign has caused the apolitical nature of the club to be questioned, it will be taken down.’
